That fight with the mage is pretty unforgiving. He usually shows up when you enter a new zone, so you're not prepared for him, he has stronger attacks than you (usually adept level spells) and if he spawns in a city (like Solitude) he can kill NPCs because Fireball, Ice Storm and Chain Lightning hit multiple targets. Add in the fact that he never runs out of magicka but YOU can and it all becomes very annoying to deal with. Can't stand that guy. Which is why I blew him up. :3
