I try and think about what makes food delicious to me, I don't find perfection attractive, leave the crumbs out, make it look inviting. I use complimentary colours in my backgrounds and tables, if a food is bland in colour then throw on some herbs or soured cream, some chillies! I try to create a little scene that tells a story almost, I use props to help with that. Charity shops are great for buying props and dishes to use that look loved and different. experiment with shooting angle too, one angle doesn't suit all. Lastly I would say to use natural light if you can, large windows, reflectors and black cards to add drama.
