Thanks for making Forty-nine a favourite.
I am sad to see you have 'quit' DA apart from observing, but I can understand that - sometimes I think about going because it seems to take up so much of my time.

Thanks for your faves. It's a pity we meet in time to say goodbye!

Not at all. (Surely we had met before?) Nevertheless, not as long as I'm still alive, which I most decidedly shall be.

About the same. Working and trying to find better work. And finishing All That Is (mostly done with the final edit).

Sweet!

I'm still swamped by work, a lot of it pretty useless, but I can feel the end nearing. Four more months!

HS graduation.

Honestly I feel like I ought to have graduated a year ago. There is no place for me here whatsoever. I am really just trying to get through the rest of the motions.

In truth I am less fussed about the specific location than I am required to pretend to be, except that I need it to be in the States, because the flexibility of its education system seems a necessity I couldn't bear to deprive myself of.

Higher ed is one of the thinks the States does right. Decided on a major or direction?

Ideally I'd like to double in phil/lit. But it's not very realistic.

chrysanthe-aL In reply to almcdermid [2011-02-04 05:11:35 +0000 UTC]

Career-wise.

Here's what I know, if you're a creative person, practical will get you bored and frustrated; it's ultimately unpractical (unless you has a so-called practical alternative that you also enjoy). Plus, practical today may be obsolete in 5 years. Finally, the road you want isn't necessarily unpractical; other people make it work.

chrysanthe-aL In reply to almcdermid [2011-02-04 08:08:45 +0000 UTC]

That is pretty much my train of thought. My parents, however... are the ones funding my education.

It's really inconvenient that the subjects they want me to study most (something along the lines of business or finance) are exactly the ones I hate. Law school is sort of the potential compromise, but even so I don't think they quite understand the US education system (i.e. they don't get that philosophy major -> law school is perfectly normal/common). But that's four years down the road, so I don't know.

almcdermid In reply to chrysanthe-aL [2011-02-04 11:50:22 +0000 UTC]

Actually, philosophy, particularly because logic is taught by philosophy departments, is considered to a very good pre-law major. My wife is currently preparing to take the BAR exam (it's possible to sidestep law school and sit for the exam here) and she confirms that symbolic logic is an essential component of law. Plus, I'm thinking that you could probably find hard data to support this argument.

chrysanthe-aL In reply to almcdermid [2011-02-04 13:13:03 +0000 UTC]

I know! Am working on it. The only problem with law is that I have to make sure I'm not tied down regionally (I am of Australian nationality).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

almcdermid In reply to chrysanthe-aL [2011-02-04 13:19:06 +0000 UTC]

My wife did some checking into that, and it seems in the case of Japan to US, there's a way that involved some study. US to Australia might be easier. Plus, being tied down only if you're actually practicing law, but lawyers get hired in many different capacities. Beside, I thought the goal was to be able to major in philosophy.

chrysanthe-aL In reply to almcdermid [2011-02-04 15:11:00 +0000 UTC]

Of course. Believe me, if it were all up to me, most of my concerns would vanish.

almcdermid In reply to chrysanthe-aL [2011-02-05 00:00:57 +0000 UTC]

Don't go into finance/business. My wife is in finance; it is definitely for those who like. Same with business, I tried and hated it. You have to lie it to be good it. This is what people who only see the 'practical' point or the $$$ don't see, having know way of seeing. Did you mention that your 'rents are academics?

Damn, I was wondering if you'd decided to submit stuff again. Although, given how shittily dA is handling poetry now, maybe you shouldn't bother anyway.

In any case, thanks for the watch. I appreciate it.
