Aww just wait. Christmas is almost here. Oh I just can't imagine Christmas in Australia. Do you have Christmas tree?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cookiesandcream1995 In reply to MoonWich [2011-12-21 15:12:04 +0000 UTC]

We have a Christmas tree, but it's plastic XD Real Christmas trees are rare here. How do you celebrate Christmas? Ooh! And how's Sindy?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MoonWich In reply to cookiesandcream1995 [2011-12-21 18:04:40 +0000 UTC]

We have plastic too. We can use it every year and don't need new one. We can buy them here but... I think it's better to have plastic.
Well here in CZ we have on december 24th Christmas. Not like in US. So we have that Christmas tree then we make some Christmas sweets and do some Christmas habits like you should not eat on december 24th and you'll see gold pig. You should eat only dinner. For dinner we eat carp (I don't know if you have it in Australia but it's traditional Christmas food here)and potato salad.
We don't have Santa but JeΕΎΓΕ‘ek (there isn't English word for it). Oh by the way in Europe it's different everywhere. JeΕΎΓΕ‘ek is only in CZ and Slovakia maybe few more countries. When family finnish dinner kids will hear bell it means JeΕΎΓΕ‘ek came and they have presents under Christmas tree. Haha I remember when I was little I thought JeΕΎΓΕ‘ek and Santa is the same. Parents were so angry because Santa is "american".
And there is lot of Christmas habits I don't remember them all and often we don't do them. Do you have any habits?
Sindy is good. Today she enjoyed first snow (in mountains is snow but here it was first) I was happy too! Last days she lays or barks and answers neighbor's dog. She like snow but it's kinda cold these days so she just lay. I hurt my leg so I couldn't go with her out but it's better and tomorrow we will go for mistletoe.

Did you know Santa Claus is actually Turkish? His proper name is Saint Nicholas, and he was from Demre. He's the patron saint of children, murderers, and sailors.
We celebrate Christmas on the 25th. On Christmas Eve, the 24th, we leave out carrots for Santa's reindeer, and a beetroot sandwich with a beer (though, that is only my family. Normal people leave cookies and milk!) at night-time.
We invite all our family over that lives close by, and open presents together - we wake everyone up at 6am and sit around the Christmas tree, and if there are any candy-canes left on the tree, that's when they're eaten (we hang them all through December). There's always a competition for who opens their presents first! There are so many hugs shared, and too many 'thank you's! We have breakfast afterwards, and play around with our presents until lunch. Everyone who comes around brings something to contribute, and we usually eat turkey, prawns, pudding, and Christmas ham! We spend the rest of the afternoon in the pool (because it's so hot here! Gah!) and have lunch-leftovers for dinner.

Carp is considered an introduced pest in Australia, because it kills all the native species of fish, and muddies up the creeks and rivers - this makes them hot, and other species can't live in them. We're not really supposed to eat them - it's illegal to eat pests unless you get special permissions.
But potato salad! We eat that on Christmas too sometimes! It's not a tradition but we do it still!

So yes, we eat all through the day. Because we're hungry buggers.
There's always sales at stores after Christmas, so if you get money at Christmas you can spend it there to get presents

O.o I thought Santa Claus is from North pole. And is from Norway. Oh good to know this.
Oh it's almost the same like in US. It looks like really relaxing day for you. We just eat and eat then watch TV play with presents the eat sleep. But Christmas is still great holiday. And I guess New Year we celebrate all the same. (Drink alcohol make some fireworks etc.)
Carp has home here. There is so many of them. In summer when I swim in river there are fishies (some carp too) and if you stay in water and don't move they will swim to you and try to eat your feet. It tickles a lot. I always start laughing. In Turkey they tried to eat me too but it hurt. But that were big fishies and I could kick them how they was slow. (When I didn't see them I by mistake kicked them because they were sooo close to me and still followed me.) Fishies are so funny.
I see you have in Australia so many prohibitions about animals. O.o
Here you can keep (I think) all animals if you bring them home. I am not sure if it's illegal to have (for example) deer or hare but if nobody knows... In summer there is LOT of parrots because they fly away from their keepers I try to catch them but it's so hard.

Fireworks are illegal here. We can't buy/make them, but councils can buy them to put on shows and such.

We have a lot of rules surrounding them because the native ones keep being killed by all the European and Asian ones, so we try help them as much as we can to stay alive. We're not allowed to keep rabbits in my state (Queensland)! You need to have a special licence, because they breed a lot and destroy our food crops >.> We have a saying due to them, to 'breed like rabbits'!

We have native parrots, and feed them in a tray on our fence! They're called grass parrots ([link] ) and they're really cute. We get lorikeets too, but they're loud and annoying ([link] ) but pretty.

That's budgie. It's very popular parrot here. Parrots that mostly fly away are budgies here. I see them very often. Lorikeets are beautiful. So many colors.
