# About me
That was me, Bell Boy! Nine years old, a boy in the middle of one of my adventures!I am caught between worlds of science and art.
I've loved computers for as long as I remember them. I was nine or ten, when I discovered my sister's boyfriend's Vic 20. I wrote my first program then, but on pencil and paper: an animated box whose lid opened and closed along its sides. I never did get to see it run, but apparently it worked out of the box. *ahem*
My first computer was the Commodore 64, and while it was intended for the family, it was implied that it was mine. I think my dad still has it, and if you examine the keys, you will find that they form to my fingers, well, at least those of the ten-year-old version of me.
Why am I telling you all this? History. Mine. It's my identity. I'm a nerd, and I I've been practising for well over a quarter century.
Fast forward; I'll leave the gory tales of my childhood for my stories. I graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering. It's meaningless because no one wants an engineer to write programs. I fell into a related career, though: system administration. In English, I babysit computer servers.
But something has been missing. As much as I immerse myself in the Discovery channel and many forms of science fiction, I still am not complete. It has only been in the past couple of months that I realized what was wrong. I don't have enough art in my life to ease my deviancy!
I am trying to bridge the gap between art and science, hoping to capture some of that fantasy I had when I was young.

I know what you mean! I really like dA and appreciate that they've included writers, but even so, I still find it hard to connect with others of our ilk.
I think the problem is that reading is a commitment. You can glance at a picture and decide in an instant whether you like it or not. But how do you judge a story unless you commit to reading at least a few sentences? As a reader, it sometimes takes me from several paragraphs to a few chapters to get into a new book simply because I need to adjust to the writer's style. A few times I've fought through a book hoping to find something I like about it only to be seriously disappointed.
I rely on recommendations in order to choose what to read. As an unknown, how can I convince people to read my stories? We writers need to figure out how to supply a one-second image of our stories!

Don't worry about the spelling, I'm grokking you. You're fortunate to have a writing group. I just recently started taking courses after work so that I can meet others who like to write, and of course, to encourage me to write. It's been very helpful. I understand the yearning to have others read your work. Well, hopefully, gradually, we can build up a little community.

Thank you for adding Writing DIALOGUE ~ The Secret to proper Paragraphing to your Fav's! This is one of the most difficult writing techniques to apply (because it often means massive rewrites.) However, once you get used to it, you'll discover that not only does it make your stories clearer; it's actually easier to write this way.

And thank you for watching me!
I really appreciated your poem, "My final goodbyes." I read it earlier today. After the first few lines I found my heart in my throat; I thought it was a suicide note and I wasn't sure what to do. As I read on, I was relieved to see the motive. I was still close to tears, I admit. I haven't read your other deviations yet, but I intend to. I think you're a very talented writer.
I am not immune to suicide either. I've been fortunate that no one close to me has taken their life, but I recently learned that a teenage acquaintance did. He was a brilliant guy, a pioneer in artificial intelligence. His story is actually documented here: [link]
Pushpinder Singh, or Push Pin [link] as we called him.
I did not know him well, but I miss him nonetheless.
Keep writing, please!

Your poem is amazing. I re-posted it to my Facebook page (via a link to your page), something I have not done for anyone else. It's way too powerful, and it serves as a message to others.
If you're "only" fifteen, I can only imagine what else you will write as you mature. You have already shown an incredible amount of insight far beyond most adults. I want to hear more from you.
Don't blush, you deserve the accolades.

It's a very intriguing story! I have to remind myself to read it again this Halloween. I don't know the reference, though. I've never heard of Vocaloid.
I wish dA had a better interface for Literature. I've spotted a few typos, missing commas, etc. that I would like to correct. I also have a few comments and suggestions that I wish I could type in-place for you to consider. Hrmmm...if I can figure out how to do this properly in OpenOffice (export to Word, if needed), I can work on it this weekend, if you like.
BTW, I am running into a bit of a problem when I post. I mostly just cut-and-paste but there are times where I want to use, for example, italics to represent dialogue that is thought and not spoken, but cut-and-paste loses this formatting. I tried saving my document to HTML and loading the resulting file, but that ended in disaster. If you have any tips...

Thank You! And Yeah, I know of the errors, sometimes DA really isn't user friendly for Literature XD And Of Course, If you have suggestions, or corrections go ahead ^^ π: 0 β©: 1
And With the Posting i have the same problem, so I just cut and paste from my word Doc. I had the Same problem with Dark Circus because it did a really strange thing I dont know why?
I'd try and put it up again, and see how that does! Sorry I'm not that much help when it comes to Techy things! XD
coregan In reply to Heartofsilverglass [2010-04-14 23:54:58 +0000 UTC]
I really wish dA had better tools for us. I like the community, but our needs are different from the other artists.
Well, I'm the computer geek... I'll poke around and see what I can find. It would be nice to be able to "Save As" in a format that dA would mark up correctly. I've started to tap into Justin's head and I really need italics to indicate what he's thinking! I just noticed that I missed at least one thought in my latest draft. It's so painful having to add these manually when my doc already has the correct formatting. Bleh.

Amen to that! *except the computer geek part...computers kind of hate me without direct supervision of computer teacher XD
BTW here is a link to the Vocaloid Song: [link]
Not sure what music you like, but this is the song that inspired Dark Circus

I'm not supposed to let this be known, but computers are easily tamed...
I can see now why you were inspired to write Dark Circus. Some of the subtitles were too fast for me to catch, but I now see how your first-person story reflects the video. I suggest you add the link to your Author's Comments.
My general preference is "folk" music, but this can easily be expanded to blues, jazz, rock, and other deviations (wait a minute!). I've recently been listening to the CBC's music channel (Radio 2, one of Canada's public radio programmes) after a lifetime of commercial classic rock, and I've been discovering a lot of new (to me) music. Since you shared a video, I will share a couple of my recent discoveries:
[link] I love the stop-motion animation! And the story reminds me of the days when I was in university. I was just a little wolf, though...
[link] This ought to be the anthem for environmentalism!
I started writing when I stopped listening to commercial radio. Coincidence? Maybe, but there is also the fact that I've bought more music since switching than the several *years* before, and I'm being drawn to artists for their craftsmanship, their stories resonate through my soul.
We draw our inspiration from whatever inspires us. It can't be any simpler than that! For the onlooker, context is good! Actually I just learned this lesson with respect to a poem I wrote. I made reference to a character from a children's short story that only a Canadian would get, and the most useful suggestion was to explain such things in the Author's Comments.
You know, so long as we are exchanging influences, I think you might like to read Un Lun Dun by China MiΓ©ville. While it's intended for young adults, I can assure you that *I* enjoyed the adventure! (And it's quite possibly why I've chosen to write a series of stories for young adults.) And if you like it, then I recommend Perdido Street Station, also by him. It's...weird. I can't explain it, other than a merger of science fiction and fantasy.
Tit for tat...what are you reading?

Heartofsilverglass In reply to coregan [2010-04-15 01:47:24 +0000 UTC]
Those are Cool songs! Even though I am not that much into folk ^^' And thanks for the Suggestion! I put the link in my Authors comment!
I think you'll like this flash since you said some teacher(s)discouraged you: [link]
As For reading...Well, besides Manga XD I am currently Reading: 'The Demonata' Series By Darren Shan, 'Need' By Carrie Jones, my fav series are: 'Cirque Du Freak' Darren Shan and 'The Wicked Lovely Series' by Milissa Marr But I've read so many these are just the top of the ice-burg! (I have over 200 books, so it hard to choose) O_o I like adventure/horror/some romance...not a lot though.
Now My turn to ask a Question! Why do you Write? (very generic, I know =_

coregan In reply to Heartofsilverglass [2010-04-15 03:26:28 +0000 UTC]
Well, we each have our own tastes. But I like what you shared with me, and I'm glad you liked what a shared with you. I think that's what matters! I hope we can find other tidbits that will help fill our worlds!
I really loved the flash video. Very touching.
It was one teacher in particular that discouraged me. She told me I was plagiarizing the work of Stephen King because I wrote a story that had some similarities. My intention was to honour him, not to steal. It really knocked me down. I now remember a peer having read my story and having told me he liked it. But by then I was shut down/shut out. *sigh* Never again, and never let anyone do this to you!
I have a stack of books to read, literally! I generally like science fiction (particularly the scifi that the most recent crop of authors has posited, very interesting stuff...). But I am a fan of good story telling. I am going to keep your recommendations handy. I love reading. I love writing. And I *adore* recommendations!

Heartofsilverglass In reply to coregan [2010-04-15 22:24:06 +0000 UTC]
Yep! And I'm glad you like the Flash! I have plenty more where that came from XD
And as for the teacher you should have said 'Imitation is the Greatest Compliment' which it is in a way! And don't worry now that I've got my goals no ones going to stop me! ^^ Plus I got a Writing Buddy over DA!
And as for recommendations, most of the stuff I read is teen stuff ^^' but I'll still give you suggestions, esp. since you said you like to write YA Lit. Just don't pull a Staphanie Meyer! (Have you read the Holly Black Modern Farie Tale Series?)
π: 0 β©: 1
coregan In reply to Heartofsilverglass [2010-04-18 23:16:44 +0000 UTC]
Trying to catch up! I haven't heard of Stephanie Meyer or The Holly Black Modern Faerie Tale! I *really* have to catch up!!! My niece lent me The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, and I should really read those next. Reading, I prefer Science Fiction (hard science) and Fantasy (epic tales), but I've come across a few good YA books over the years (Un Lun Dun was the last one, and I think you'd like it). Writing, YA is an interesting avenue and I'm definitely comfortable with it.
Writing buddy, that sounds like a good idea.

Heartofsilverglass In reply to coregan [2010-04-19 01:12:48 +0000 UTC]
Well, as for Stephanie Meyer I don't suggest it for you because it is 100% vampire Romance, I liked it when i was in seventh Grade. But i do strongly suggest Holly Black, because if you are planning on writing to older YA she shows the good, the bad, and the ugly about what goes on in a person life (and Fairies are in it to!!! XD) And I will Definitely look for Un Lun Dun, I'm not sure they have it here, but i can order it!
And i agree, Writing buddy does sound like a good Idea

I really ought to read The Spiderwick Chronicles whether or not I stick with this genre. If you can find Un Lun Dun, I strongly recommend it, but anything by China MiΓ©ville is fantastic. He's an amazing fantasy author, always turning the genre on its head. Un Lun Dun is a YA novel, and I think you'll like it. The protagonist is a young girl. She and her friend adopt an old milk container and name it Curdle.
