Surprisingly things aren't that bad -- yet. There is a noted off-world push for Mars, albeit incipient.

Curiously, with how it touched on so many topics of technology, the opposites of some of the predictions in Blade Runner have come to pass. The film predicted electronic AI as a dead end by 2000. By 2000 and still today little or no "biochip" development has taken place, and there are instead real concerns about the effect of electronic algorithm-based information curation on society. It also predicted interplanetary travel by 2019, but no worldwide computer network before 2020. By our 2019 we still have yet to return to the Moon, but on the other hand... well, we are talking right now.

This is like Peter Thiel's argument about tech development. Seems like virtual was easier than actual. So path of least resistance?

Tinselfire In reply to cosmicbound [2020-01-16 20:11:58 +0000 UTC]

That I am not familiar with - most of the discourse on development I have followed has been on general AI and aerospace engineering, not so much on the entrepreneurship behind it. Except for the old adage that military aircraft are inherently four-dimensional, that is.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cosmicbound In reply to Tinselfire [2020-01-16 21:00:55 +0000 UTC]

However, the virtual may be on the point of converting into the actual. The whole point of AI now is to create something that can make and understand things better than humans can.

There's a thought: AI as livestock, bred for a specific purpose.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cosmicbound In reply to Tinselfire [2020-01-26 13:43:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes, maybe like cylons. Two related thoughts: (1) creating organic brains in a lab and fed inputs like for machine learning, (2) internet as migrating human mind to AI and vice versa (AI colonising human mind as output device).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tinselfire In reply to cosmicbound [2020-01-26 17:31:38 +0000 UTC]

I like the latter idea. The popular image of AI tends to gravitate towards beyond-human intelligence with godlike scope of ability - and speaking refined state British English for some reason. But perhaps the real way forway is the completely opposite end, with less intelligent but more specifically utilitarian AI piggybacking on humans. Like ferrets drawing wires or rats detecting mines. And it is a fascinating thought the exchange could be two-way. It seems a plausible development as well since in a way, the Internet is already a sort of global cyborg - just the biointerface is still a bit shoddy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cosmicbound In reply to Tinselfire [2020-02-25 11:14:15 +0000 UTC]

Maybe AI is supposed to sound like Bertrand Russell. I think I spot some of the AI piggybacking myself, as I begin to consider thoughts as boosting 'probability signals'. I begin to see my own experience like a machine learning algorithm. I think you see this piggybacking in meme culture too. Of course, all this can be drawn back to empiricist philosophy (e.g. Hume). But the technology makes the message clearer.

Indeed, the internet is a low bandwidth biointerface, extended memory system. It is hard to deny that there is a very real continuum between things -- between our native minds and the artificial, technological mind.
