He broke the sky with a single word. Jacob watched him from his perch atop the wooden ledge, waiting for the veil to collapse; the multitude of colours was a terrifying yet altogether beautiful sight, unmatched by any in his memory. The sheer paramountcy of it seemed to drain the very earth itself.
Miraculously, waiting seemed to be the only difficult part of it all; David was at ease with his work, oblivious of everything outside of his own power. All that Jacob had to do was wait, and wait, watching as the colours continued to cascade, until the sky was but blackness. He looked up into the void, eyeing it intently and losing himself, and marveled as a bright sparkle flickered into place: a single star, lost in the sea of space. Then another exposed itself, followed by another, and several more, until above, alone, was the big dipper.
David moved his lips, and the sky closed once more. Trapped in his own awe, Jacob applauded by reflex.
βThat was amazing. Brilliant. Iβve never seen anything quite like it.β He jumped off the ledge and onto a large rock, which he climbed down to the yellowed grass. Behind him hummed the observatory, its telescope automatically resetting itself. Everything had been recorded.
David stuck his hands inside the large pockets of his felt jacket, which reminded Jacob of an old couch he had, before he moved out here. He had moved here out of stress; with the exception of the odd black helicopter, this place was relatively quiet, devoid of industrialization. Why was David here, though? Jacob assumed that he was running from something, but he never knew what exactly. The government? Debt? An ex-girlfriend?
βWhat have you shown me?β
After such a spectacle, the plain sky suddenly seemed alarmingly plainer.
βJust something pretty.β
βPretty? Thatβs all?β
βYes, thatβs all.β
Jacob watched Davidβs face. He was looking up at the sky, relaxed, as if nothing had happened. Maybe nothing did happen; maybe it was just a hallucination. The data would offer proof.
