Favorite visual artist: Lots of big names from Magic the Gathering.Favorite movies: Fight Club, Mewtwo Strikes Back (how tho? you cant Strike Back if it was your debut), Rogue One, The Incredibles, The Lord of the Rings.
Favorite TV shows: dA needs to change this; lots of artists don't actually need TV. But if i must choose... i'd say wildlife documentaries.
Favorite bands / musical artists: Major chords. They act as a catalyst for the creation of dynamic action scenes.
Favorite books: Biology by Campbell and Reece; Garth Nix's Sabriel series; The Feeling Buddha; now encompassing digital art magazines as well.

Favorite games: Kingdom Hearts series, Pokemon series, Starcraft, Dragonage Origins, MTG, and the Digimon tamagotchi.

Other Interests: Armors and mechs, biology, spirituality, runes, gods, dreams, poetry, world-building, character conception.
# About me
The existance of Tan Yi Da is an enigmatic study to the most clinical of childhood analyses - what could have driven a left-handed INFP, who picked up drawing at the age of two and poetry at the age of four, to defy all sensible extrapolations of nature and gone off to major in a completely non-arts related discipline like Chemical and Molecular Engineering? He can't remember either, but does recall, with teary-eyed fondness, that he once began on the doomed path to science, as an idealist, with the noble intentions of becoming a Marine Biologist. When Yi Da isn't busy trying to balance his life, work and bizarre self-concocted spiritual philosophy, he is largely preoccupied with artistic and literary endeavors that release brainchildren from his mind - a homeostatic mechanism that prevents his paracosm from reaching critical mass and exploding from the barren wasteland that is life. He occasionally freelances in graphic design, stoking a flame that is prophesied to one day light the butt of the proverbial moth up like the fireworks of August. He likes pokemon, and was a frequent astral traveler until he took some confidence to the knee.
For any questions, you can email him at antiday@gmail.com, which is a neat anagram of his name as he so repeatedly insists.

Hahaha hiii! aw man, i do miss the good times, but it feels like so many pple have left, like the world has moved on from dA... I stopped actively using dA at some point of time after college? and it felt like a foregone stage of my life, like a trunk in the attic, that you'd stumble back onto one day and think "omgad, these stuff were mine?!?"
hahaha
Instagram! I'm cool with instagram. I've had time to get used to it (still dont understand insta stories tho, haha). Mine is www.instagram.com/antiday_art/ . Feel free to add!

Yes, a lot of people have left Deviantart. Although there are still interesting people who have not left. (And this makes me continue to like the web).
Now they want to revitalize the web with many updates. I don't know if they will be good. (I have my doubts).
I have to learn to use instagram. Little by little.

HIIII!!! How've you been!? XD
Life's been crazy, my course is like nonstop assignments after assignment and it'll really starting to bug me how much of the slow worker i am.. especially when the projects really pile up..! In just a few months, we've learnt so much more about the industry's softwares than i've thought possible to cram into so little time: zbrush, maya, nuke, 3dequalizer -- not to mention 3dcoat, mari, marmoset and more later on O.O heck, im learning more about even photoshop! hahaa
i have sooo much work i wanna put up on dA and artstation but i just dont have the time for it :< it's 3.30 am right now and im still doing a maya rigging python-scripting assignment, trying to understand how the code translates to node instructions OTL Almost every school day i leave when the building closes at about 11pm, and back at home, i try to get more things done if the fatigue doesn't get me first.
Every time i think i know a little more about the industry, i zoom out and i find that im actually still on the tip of the iceberg - a infinitely vast iceberg that only gets bigger the more you look. i can feel myself improving, though that is no surprise when every moment feels as if i'm running out of time, that i was out of time to begin with.. It's a good feeling. Stress is a good feeling. Better to burn like a star than not at all
Have you been well? Im srry, rly havent checked in here in a long time :'D How's your progress? Have you landed a job yet? I'd love to hear about your struggles and victories too..!

That sounds both exhausting and exciting! Man, I'd love to learn how to use 3D softwares. I'm focusing on honing my current skills for now, but I'll definitely invest future money&time into learning 3D - I'd love to see what you've been working on in the time being
Take your time, posting is so boring and time consuming. Also, I'm glad to hear you can manage stress. Try not to be too hard on yourself though!
I'm doing good, I've been working mainly as a freelance illustrator, but I also got a studio job as an environment designer for an animated short. I wasn't needed for a long time and they rarely need 2D artists in that studio, so now I'm wrapping up my last private commission before diving headfirst into the amazing world of job hunting! There's only so much work you can get if you don't market your art and don't send portfolios around. I was pretty lucky for a chicken, but it's definitely time to take the reins :3

3D softwares are a LOT of work..! I gotta give you the hard facts first; Maya is incredibly difficult to learn on your own without a teacher or dedicated lessons. Zbrush is more manageable - i picked it up on my own purely via a series of "intro to zbrush" videos on Digital Tutors, but there's still a lot of things that guides and videos don't tell you, such as workflow techniques, that i eventually learnt the hard way >.< If you ever pick up maya or zbrush and get stuck somewhere or have questions, feel free to drop me a msg! and i'll try my best to help
Freelance illustrator is so cooollll! i mean, my current pursuit of all things 3D and 2D is really how i intend to beat around the bush of life until i arrive at my true goal of becoming a concept artist -- but you're there already, being an artist! Environment is really hard, and a lot of companies like Ubisoft are constantly on the lookout for good environment artists. I'd love to get good in it, buuuuut there's just so much on my plate right now. But yea >.< the market's saturated with 2D artists, and it's really, really hard to shine. But your stuff is hella special and i really hope they catch the attention of some good companies out there with the eye to see the amazing conceptualizations you are capable of.
I've just been making works and not assembling a portfolio yet :"D shiiiiiiiiit it feels like i'm running out of time already..!

Woah, thank you for the tips! And for your availability Same goes with 2D and concept design and whatever contribution I could give to your progress – I love it when there’s a sort of exchange between artists, especially when they’re in slightly different fields!
I think learning 3D is a GREAT investment and you can definitely get into 2D concept from there without having to become a student all over again! It seems to me that 3D artists are more needed/there are more openings/perhaps most small companies simply can’t afford to pay a 2D artist when they can have a 3D artist that can handle some 2D work as well. It’s a bit disheartening for us 2D people that started out as illustrators and didn’t get a chance to learn 3D before realizing how important it is for video games right now. There’s always time, though. And you can be trained in-house as a 3D artist if you prove yourself to be an asset for the company – and viceversa. I know of some 3D modelers that started out with humble tasks and worked their way up to the point where they were trained to do 2D concept art right in the studio they were already working in!
Freelancing has a lot of perks, but it's pretty exhausting… unless you've invested on building a solid network of followers (something I avoided as much I could until now lol), finding your work will not be easy for potential clients, so work is sporadic. I was pretty lucky until now because I got one big commission after another and a short studio job, but it’s not going to last forever if I don’t put my work out there. It’s not the best if you want stability, a decent income and living breathing human beings around you during your working hours. Which is actually pretty nice.
Thanks for the encouragement! I'm working hard to recover all the fundamentals of drawing I've been neglecting (I AM PAYING THE PRICE. SO MUCH) and to be more... open to showing my own characters and worldbuilding concepts.
Take your time! You'll have tons of time to build your portfolio when you'll be done studying/doing assignments

Hiiii there!! thanks for checking out - and commenting - on so much of my stuff really appreciate the personal touch! When i opened my dA inbox today, i was so bowled over, "omgg YAY comments! but who's this kind person???"
That got me interested, so i took a look around in your gallery, and realized that you're a sketchup artist and dig mechs too Your art is verrrrrry detailed for sketchup work; and i gotta say, do consider giving other, more powerful 3d modeling software a shot - like Rhino, or AutoCAD, 3dmax, cinema4D, or Maya. I think with your imagination, you WILL be able to put those software(s) to good use and broaden the limits of what you can do to create even more impressive things! I'm not sure if you're too busy with other commitments to explore the realm of 3d modeling, but i sincerely encourage you to give it a shot
All the best, man!!
// Oh yes, my self-portrayal's in third person cus i've read some art books and graphic novels where, at the end of the book, they'd feature the contributing artists' photos and short snippets of their bios, and I really like how they come up with all these crazy talk about themselves. And so i decided to try it --- and it became a mini essay! LOLLLL ive got no self-control when it comes to writing, hahaha

oh, now im reading your suggestions.
i have been allways under the impression that basically every 3d/CAD software is similar, maybe a bit different in user interface and of course the rendering options. so i was glad to have found sketchup, being very capable and free (i didnt get blender, which is also free and capable, but too complicated for me).
do you consider these other options better? why is that?
i kinda love skulpturers though. so id love to have zbrush, but i dont have too much money. and recently ive found neobarok, which i yet have to try out, but it could be a free zbrush alternative.
//
i had to be way into university education to realize that all those descriptions were self-written, when we made a publishing project. i was so bummed out about that. it kinda feels like liying - that someone wrote something (nice) about you, but in reality it was all you yourself.
still have my problems with that.
but nevermind
thanks for the great answer.

hmm, it's always a question of comfortableness in using a software versus how efficient one is at using it. If you are very quick with sketchup, and use it to create amazing things faster, say, Rhino, maybe sticking to sketchup is a good idea. Exploring other softwares to see if they work better for you is still a good idea though..!
I like sketchup because of its easy-to-use extrusion function, and how fast it can be in helping the user conceptualize and block shapes out. Im not sure if you can pull vertexes, faces and edges around in sketchup, but you definitely can do that in, say Maya and Rhino and Cinema 4D.
If you dont intend to skill in animation, Maya and Cinema4D aren't necessary.
I've never heard of neobarok :'D

ah, isee, thanks for getting into that more detailed.
yes, its quite a drag (haha) to pull stuph around in sketchup. a lot is possible (as ive seen once or twice in some internet video) but its not easy and you have to be carefull and precise and its non-intuitive. thats why half my love is with sculptors..
on the other hand, im slow with any program. thats one of the reasons why i dont try out other program that aint free. i just know, i wont come far in a 30days trial period..
well thats just me, a bit good at most, outstanding at nothing
have a great life!

I would but something deep down tells me i'll never be a professional as there's too much to learn. I mean we're always learning right? So in the end we're always students. xDD
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
darachusi In reply to Eden-West [2016-03-09 13:31:23 +0000 UTC]
that. is so true. Hahaha i guess i feel that way about myself since i'm more acutely aware of my own shortcomings and need for learning, and it's much easier to think of other more professional artists as, well, professionals..! In all definition, esp if you're already actively making an income from art, i suppose you can be defined as a professional, but i also do understand that affixing that tag to oneself is kind of.. an act of complacency? Like a masters grad calling themselves a master, or phDs calling themselves doctors
i too believe that the ultimate is neither a ceiling nor a destination.
