hee hee hee yea you wouldn't want to babysit! LOL I did a whole series of angy kid shots in my phtogrphy gallery that fetured her. I was trying to get nice photos for her 3 year pictures but she was SOOOOO bad. The photos are cute tough even if she's not smiling at the camera. LOL Here is a sample: [link] Maybe I should get a fish eye and take one of her yelling at me. I bet it would look just like your I could not take it ![link] LOL I still laugh every time I see that one!

Thanks Deanna, for the comment on Russell Thayer

I use mechanical pencils by β€œSteadler” .3 and .5 and very rarely .7. the softness are 2b, b, 2h and 4h. I love the consistence of line and the control they give me. I use different substrates but mostly I use acid free mat boards different shades of white depending on the model. The backgrounds that I get come from a kind of painstaking process of drawing in small circles, it two layers. Next as a third layer; I lightly go in a diagonal direction do get rid of any shine or waxyness. The main thing to think about is not to try to get there to soon; it takes hours of messing around to achieve a uniform look.

When I work from life I draw all over the paper, but with the tight, time-consuming drawings, I finish a small area at a time. I do indicate very lightly where the features are, along with a series of very rough sketches, this helps me keep control of the over all image. Each area becomes a small work in itself, I think about the abstract quality of that area, the composition of it and how it relates to the whole. Since I don’t have the patience that some think I have, every day I get to complete a tiny drawing. If I had to do the whole thing and not see any completion for months it would drive me nuts.

Thank you so much for answering! It sounds like you work a lot the way a friend of mine does. She told me she will actually block off all other areas so it forces her to do only a small area at a time. I think she also told me once that she has used a magnifying glass to fill in every area of paper tooth that showed through. You would enjoy her work I think. Here is a link if your interested: [link]

I hope you don't mind but I also shared your what you wrote with the drawing group that's linked from Carol's page. It is a group of artists that mostly do graphite work although there are a few CP and inkers in there as well. How to get those dark dark blacks is always a hot topic there.

I have never tried mat boards before. Paper is always another hot topic on the list. It always seems to be a fight over if you want a paper that holds the graphite and gives you really dark darks, or if you want one that gives you really smooth surfaces. I think I'll have to give Mat board a try!
