of course, you have such interesting work! I loved your take on the Thor's hammer. I was looking around the other day searching for a 'feminine' Thor's hammer, thinking to myself how much of an oxymoron that was but still wanting something pretty with the same symbolic meaning, and I found your designs! Very exciting.

Thank you for the watch! I'm happy you have watched my deviations, as thus I was able to discover yours. You have some wonderful work!

It's great what you did with the Rifle: I've always been a big fan of taking old things of all forms and adding ones own personal touch to them. You've done a wonderful job!

Thanks yet again, keep up the great work!

Why thank you. I really love your work as well. It's very neat and precise and I hope to be able to gain that kind of control as well through practice. Right now I'm working on an altar shelf, I'm excited. Are you working on anything right now? Can't wait to see more of your work.

You're certainly welcome.

Thank you! Although to me it seems that you have more control than I do over woodburning. I'm quite the amateur, and I can usually only focus on symbols and simple knotwork. Being busy means I don't have time to improve, and I have so many interests it's hard to focus on just one. Perhaps I can get more into it again in the winter during break.

Hmmm, not working on much now, although I do have a 12" Aegishjalmur plaque that I've been meaning to burn. Again just simple, but still empowering to burn.

Take care my new friend!

Oh I know exactly what you mean about time to focus on a project! Seriously, the self I'm planning burn work on right now, was made last year around this time for me to use it. lol But I'm glad I've finally gotten around to it. I'm excited for you when you get around to working on that plaque. That is one of my favorite symbols. I made it once on a small wooden circle piece (about the size of a quarter) and attatched it to a bookmark I made that had a asatru/pagan saying. I made a little collection of different ones like that actually for a group of friends for Yule. Pretty creative and economically inexpensive if I do say so myself.

Hi, just wondering if you could help me out with a project I think maybe a little ambitious for someone who's never done woodwork.

A friend of mine asked me to help him out and do some artwork on some kali sticks (they're meant for fighting). I have no idea what I'm going to do with them and I saw your work on wood-burning, so I'm wondering, where you learned to do it, and is it difficult to pick up? Also what materials (aside from the wood itself) do I need to do this?

I'd really appreciate the help.

Jocelyn

P.S. You have a wonderful ability to make your work look deceptively simple.

hi there! This sounds like an exciting project. You will have to show me pictures when you're done. Well, I'm not an expert on woodburning, but I do have some tips. I've learned some from experience and others from people I've talked to about their work. First off, you can get a woodburning tool from stores like Joann's or Micheal's. If you're going to do simple line work with little to no shading, you can get the basic tool which has about 3-4 different heads to it. It's only about $9.99. Now, if you're planning to do this more often, or want to be able to do more shading work it's probably best to throw down more money on the tool. The more tips/heads it has, the more intricate designs you'll be able to do.

Most of my work is done by touching the wood itself, but many wood burners will probably tell you not to do that. To get dark, definate work like mine, you can stick to that. If you want lighter tones and shading, the work can be done by simply using the heat from the space inbetween the tool and wood. This is also done more effectively with a woodburning tool that has different degrees of heat. Mine merely has on/off.

It is probably most important to draw the image on the wood first. However, if you would like a particular design, or you're working with already treated/darker wood, my favorite little trick is tracing paper! Simply pick your favorite design and trace it with white tissue paper, or just use the paper to help you imprint your own design into the wood. Then use, masking tape (so it doesn't stick too harshly to the wood) on the piece and burn right through the paper! Some of it might stick to the wood, but it easily scratches off. You'll probably also need to burn over the design again after taking the paper off because it will only be a light outline. I did all of my woodburnings on the rifle this way. Also, if you want to stain your wood it's probably best to do it after burning it. This way, if you make a mistake, you can scrape it or sand it out, and add the stain afterwards.

Since you've never done woodwork like this before, I definately recommend a plain slab of untreated wood to practice on and really get familiar with what all the different tips can do. Also, if you can, you'll need to hold the wood up when working on it. If you need to lay it on a flat surface, then I recommend goggles from home depot or something to keep the smoke out of your eyes. If you're working on the design for a long period of time, a leather glove can come in handy. The tool can get very hot. Oh and definately set the tool on something like your practice wood.... it comes with a little holder, but I've acidently burned the table a couple times, so it doesn't hurt to be prepared. lol

It's really not that difficult to pick up... in fact, what you see on here were my first projects with woodburning! So I'm sure yours will be amazing. Hope this helps and didn't overload your system. lol

Holy crackers, thanks for the quick reply! Great advice too.

I might actually try it out on normal slabs of wood first; sounds like a better plan. My friend's original plan though was to do it on sticks - which unfortunately are round. I suppose he can do all the holding then while I burn off his fingers.

Do you have any images of the tools that you used? Tutorials would be helpful as well if there are any lying around. If all turns out well, I'll definitely send you images of the final product. If not, I suppose I can send you images of whatever is left behind?

Thanks again!

Oh here you go, this is a decent one on youtube: [link]

She uses a film where the pressure makes the outline print onto the wood instead of tracing paper.

Remember that this is sped up super fast so take it slow

You're welcome. I know what you mean about the round objects. The irminsul I did was on the top of the rifle near the very end so I set it up on top of piles of fabric just so it would lay right. Other designs I did on that one I like held the rifle between my legs, sat on the floow, and burned it that way lol. Probably not safe, but hey it got the job done.
At the moment I do not have any tutorials, but here are some websites that may help.
This is one tool I have, there's a second one that I got a joanns it just has more tips:

Here is a site completely dedicated to woodburning! This one has some of the more facy temperature setting burners:

I think there are a couple videos on youtube as well, but I didn't see any good tutorials. Hope it all works out!

Actually they weren't for classes, I just loved the designs and wanted to make my own... so I did. lol That simple. I'll definately take commissions for them. But you don't need to worry about that. Wich one is your favorite? I miss you like crazy too and actually I was planning on sending ya one to think of me on, but I suck at making this a surprise. lol

So you're a natural, eh? XD Epic! I'm glad you've been finding things, artsy things nonetheless, to do for fun Psshnaw! It was a surprise and a delight hearing from you on Sunday. I haven't been on myspace in eternity (myspace wouldn't even let me see the site because it didn't like my browser. Sheesh!) I was thinking about getting a facebook. Dunno if I should. I'm not exactly social, or willing to show pictures of myself. A lot of people ask me if I have one, and it's rather unnerving for some reason. Do you have a facebook?
