Its all good, hope you don't regret saying that, I am looking for other cosplayers opinions on material and or direction for my latest. I tend to be really excited by what ever the big thing is at the moment so that being said I, like so many others, am trying my hand at halo 4. I'm especially excited since the costume looks like it needs more sewing than previous versions. The undersuit is the key here. Take a look at some of these links and tell me your opinion.

Im planning on putting something like foamies in between layers of fabric for the designs on the chest. I just don't have a clue how to make that texture on the material. I saw your Miranda and am blown away, and unlike most I read through the comments to see what was said so I wouldn't be one more person asking you where you bought the material for her. Anyway do you think I could get some spandex with dye sublimation which is what your material looks like, will look right? Just wondering what you think.

hmwsgx In reply to drewnation [2012-12-09 21:20:48 +0000 UTC]

There are three options. One is Athletic fabric [link] the downside is that it has minimal stretch. That is what i used on the side parts of the Miranda suit.
Second option is painting it on. Grab a blue stretch fabric and create a stencil with the pattern you want, lay it over the flat fabric and use a fabric spray paint like this one [link] oh and be careful when spraying, if you linger over an area too long you can saturate the fabric and make the pattern bleed out.
The third option is the most expensive--which is designing the pattern and print it onto spandex. You can load a design at fabricondemand.com and get a great design printed--it is what i did for the asari commando outfit. It is pricey though--34 bucks a yard!

drewnation In reply to hmwsgx [2012-12-09 21:46:37 +0000 UTC]

I fear that option 3 will be the best answer. I have no worry that I could make it out of fabric but after all is said and done will do that be much better than getting it printed? Thank you for your opinion.

printing it saves a lot of time, i usually recommend printing over anything. Not a problem, happy costuming!

I have decided to make some halo armor, with my limited knowledge of what people do I figure papercraft and eva foam looks like it may be good for my first try. Ive collected the pep files and am looking over them, learning how to scale, but am unsure of the path im attempting. Is foam and papercraft a great may for a beginner to try?

Uratz-Studios In reply to drewnation [2012-11-24 15:40:36 +0000 UTC]

Regardless of the path, there is never an easy road. There will be trial and errors. I tried the cutting and scaling, its tough cuz u never know how big or how it will fit even if u scale it right in the computer. Most people build more than one part make sure that scales right then scale the rest of the peps according to the final scale of one part like the gauntlet. Did I mention the cutting takes forever? I say do a bit at a time and take breaks. It will drive u nuts. But the results are spectacular when u go thru the pain in the ass process. So yeah good luck.

That gives me hope. So what is it you do. I want to pretend to be real knowledgeable about this sort of thing, I see a lot of things where people are sculpting props, like your chief gauntlet but I dont really know what your doing there? Is that clay? do you make a positive then cast and reproduce it somehow?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Uratz-Studios In reply to drewnation [2012-11-24 16:44:38 +0000 UTC]

I sculpt it, make a mold negative of it using silicone, then cast a positive.

plaster for the negative? what are you, others sculpt out of? what are you using to make the positive? If i annoy you please let me know.

No i use silicone rubbers to take the impression then use resin fiberglass for the positive shape

drewnation In reply to Uratz-Studios [2012-11-25 15:41:02 +0000 UTC]

i have done some fiber and resin in the past for an armor. Back then i mixed the resin with some denentured alcohol and had a much easier time with it but that was flat broad angles, how do you get fiber in to a mold that has small curves?

I use very fine fiberglass and super soft chopped matte.

they are from the multiplayer campaign "spartan Opps" I screen caped the first video, you have to play through 5 missions and wait a week to get the next cut scene. I was using them to start my undersuit. I'm going to try starting there.

drewnation In reply to Uratz-Studios [2012-11-27 14:02:18 +0000 UTC]

I would like something shinny like vinyl but synthetics would be the best for form and function but not for looks. The videos look like they are wearing neoprene under and some kind of armor padding over. In-fact it looks like the armor has become the undersuit and the hard outer shell is for some other purpose all together, I'm exploring options now. Ive had a lot of success augmenting wicking materials for costumes in the past. Any suggestions?

Uratz-Studios In reply to drewnation [2012-11-28 01:38:03 +0000 UTC]

The only way to achieve it is with foam latex which is tough for us guys who don't have the budget and facilities to make it. The suit would be sculpted then molded and produced. Another expensive method is to use flex-foam-it self expanding foam. That also requires some genius skill to mix quickly and inject into the molds.

drewnation In reply to Uratz-Studios [2012-11-28 03:35:12 +0000 UTC]

yeah thats way more than I can do at this point. But I understand the method behind things like this,
[link]
I think I could sew one but I want to stay away from the vinyl, that stuff is hot combined with a layer of padding. I dont even want to think about how hot that suit would be.

Your best bet is lycra and thin foam padding. My brain is working on it. But with a hex texture fabric and a pro seamstress I think I can do this.

Yeah Im with you on that. I wonder if it would matter much if it was two pieces? shirt and pants rather than a body suit.

If you are using fiberglass armor then maybe something that doesn't sag when the weight of the armor tugs on the clothing. Use straps and buckles
