You're welcome.

These pieces remind me of a couple of close friends. One lives life simply, not needing much more than her friends and the necessities of life. While the other is very complex. She has to be involved with a variety of charities and foundations or she is lost and confused.

They do not know each other, I'm not even sure they'd understand the other they're so different. One is very much like a Hobbit, and the other is like Meryl Streep's character in The Devil Wore Prada. That's how I see these two works too. Crick Hollow is laid-back, simple in that it doesn't require much to get the full picture. Morannon is just he opposite. It's complex and detailed with a lot going on.

I'm really sorry but I can't reply to you on your original message re my Elrond/Elros pic. My broswer won't show me more than the first line o you second para, and also the thread is hidden and locked. All I can see is you asking me for permission to put my pic on your profile. That would be fine if you gave credit and a link.
I think Elrond is one of the most complex and interesting characters in Tolkien's work. He has seen so much loss in his life - yet he is still able to let his daughter and sons make their own choices about leaving middle earth or staying. That's real strength!

I've unhidden the comments, I hope it helps.

I agree completely. There is so much more to Elrond than even was written. He knows that Arwen must remain for the future, that he has undoubtedly foreseen, to of Middle Earth, and that his sacrifice is far outweighed by the good of all people.

kiwidoc In reply to esteslundomiel [2009-11-01 13:40:57 +0000 UTC]

And he also knows what it must be to oultlive your loved one, and to never really belong. He watched it happen to Elros. That adds so much poignancy to his farewell to Arwen. He also knows she will never follow him over the western sea - his sons may still yet choose to do that, but he will never see Arwen again ... not even in the afterlife. He knows what pain is ahead of him - having already lost his win brother the same way. No wonder he seems a little grim at times - so he should be!

I don't know that I would have that kind of courage. I think his ability to foresee events just made it harder for him. Imagine knowing for 2000 years that when you sail it would be the last time you would ever see you child.

I reread the appendix and the silmaril bit again. Didn't Arwen die as a human, so she'd never see Elron again - not like Luthien who got an elven afterlife. That woiuld be even sadder. Although I didn't like everything about the movies, I did love that grim feeling with just an edge of danger you sometimes saw in Elrond. Looking back through his life that makes a great deal of sense

Because Arwen married Aragorn she had to give up her immortality. All of Elrond's children were given a choice, but because of Aragorn, the choice was made. I can't but think just how sad and miserable she would be for eternity if she'd chosen otherwise. Elves actually envy mortals for their mortality. I've read it in a number of places in several of the books.

But elves also have a great sense of joy as well as sorrow. Look at Galadriel - she's seen so much change and loss, her daughter got attacked, friends have been killed - she even saw the kinslayings and was there when the worst of elves betraying elves happened ... and yet she still had music and laughter in her voice.

The passage of time may have helped as well as having Celeborn at her side.

kiwidoc In reply to esteslundomiel [2009-11-03 02:43:07 +0000 UTC]

but also I think elves have an inherent sense of the joy and beauty of life, nature, of music etc; and they know of the importance of savouring each moment and celebrating the simple joys. They laugh a lot, and I think people forget that ... especially after the movies. The only one with that spark of laughter in her eyes was Galadriel

esteslundomiel In reply to kiwidoc [2009-11-03 17:20:00 +0000 UTC]

I look at it this way. If you have eternity on your side, would you rather sit around and grouse about it or would you make music, and jokes, and beautiful poetry? I have heard it said that pain and sorrow are the parents of poetry and song, in this case, however, needing something to do to past time interestingly is just as big a motivating factor as pain, and sorrow. Not that Elves didn't have that too. As for Galadriel, she does indeed have a sense of humor, I can see it in her eyes, for some reason I can see her as a prankster.

I think I'm babbling today. I probably should wait to tomorrow to answer any more messages. LOL

kiwidoc In reply to esteslundomiel [2009-11-03 17:33:58 +0000 UTC]

I agree about the needing to pass time reason - but I also think elves must have a particular gift at enjoying each moment as it comes, rather than always focussing on what's ahead and striving to reach it, which is what far too many humans do. To me that's why they are quite child-like in some of tolkien's writings ... note I wrote childlike not childish

Hey by the way you have great avatar! Like star wars? I love the movies! I should make some SW fanart... Thank you so much for sweet words! So you from artist family? That must be tough sometimes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

esteslundomiel In reply to Wormnine [2009-10-30 22:49:07 +0000 UTC]

I'm much more of a LOTR fan, but I have been in Yoda mode for a few days and thought it appropriate.

The artists in my family are from widely diverse media. Mom is an illustrator as is my brother, but he is much more a calligrapher and illuminator than an illustrator. He's learned the methods from Medieval Europe and uses those in his work. My grandmother was a pianist. And I play a couple of instruments, but more than anything I'm an actor and writer. So we really don't step on toes or cross each other. And that works very well.
