managed to find you...

When I was looking up for some horse stock I noticed your stock account is deactivated... It seemed a bit weird to me and now that dA is/was having a big problem with hacker(s) deactivating accounts [link] / [link] I though that might be the case?

Roast Beef is awesome, but I don't have time to do commissions anymore. Enjoy your Roast Beef! She looks like a great chicken. I used to have one named Noodles.

Are horses common in Alaska, or?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

farfinmosker In reply to limeslide [2011-09-28 21:41:35 +0000 UTC]

Depends on where you are. There is always going to be at least a small population in larger towns like Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, etc. And some companies still use them for logging and tourism. But it's more than a pain in the butt to keep them up here. In SE AK, one bale of hay (the small rectangle ones) can run you $20, and it's not even good quality because there are no roads to many places there. It has to come by plane or boat. Near the Matsu, hay prices are better though, because they grow it and it can be shipped via road nearby. And rain rot is a huge problem in SE because it rains just about every day. Up north, you have to have a heated barn because it gets much too cold for normal horses. In some places, flat land without permafrost is not readily available and can get VERY expensive, so many horses do not have ample room to be horses. Yet, people do still manage to keep them up here.

That's a shame, I wish I could share the hay and warmth with you. Alaska still is a beautiful place nonetheless. Maybe climate change will bring a chance for easier care, I mean, if you want to that is. What made you like horses? They are pretty animals either way, but what exactly tempted you to make a DA just for them (well, mostly). Also, find a good house yet?

farfinmosker In reply to limeslide [2011-09-30 23:18:00 +0000 UTC]

Well, with the climate change, it can mean bad things, too with rising sea level, more fires, etc. We'll see how that plays out I guess. I would like to get a mule or two one day. I've always liked horses because my mom used to have some in Juneau when I was growing up. Before my dad built the barn, she rented a stall at a local barn and there were a lot of horses there, too. I spent a lot of time around them. So from the first time I picked up a crayon, all I drew were horses. Since I started drawing them earlier than other subjects, it's what I'm best at...so I just thought i should keep doing it...? lol.

No house, yet. Going to be like 2-5 years...ugh. We aren't bringing in enough money/month right now to go from renting to owning. But I do feel good that we have a ginormous down payment...because that's less mortgage money we'll be paying later on, and it will lower our monthly payment. Someday, I will have chickens!!!

Well, with change there are always side effects, even though I do feel for all those poor animals in the rainforests, and such, the future looks really good for extreme northern and southern countries/place. I'm not going to like seeing what the world looks like in a few years, but I'm sure there will be some good things coming out of it. Mules are pretty animals. I'm a bit jealous of your childhood, to be honest, I've always wanted to live near animals! One day, I really want a big yard, or a ranch of sorts. Haha, I'd love to see your little pony drawings, they sound pretty.

That's too bad about the house. Hmm, seeing how you managed to raise like $200 on drawings, wouldn't opening up commissions help you with the paying? I understand if you wouldn't like doing that, but that's fine, your opinion is as important as mine, maybe even more!

Chickens are pretty animals too. xD All of them are, really!

I'm going to be owning a few guinea pigs soon, buying all the supplies first!

I don't think it looks good at all for the high latitudes, actually. Sure, the warmer winter temps may be nice, but the price is too great for something like that. Basically, our whole way of life will collapse along with the ecosystems on land and in the water. Oceans will warm and become more acidic, messing up productivity on all trophic levels. Many places that depend on the land and sea may suffer because the animals and plants they depend on will die of malnutrition, disease, or migrate elsewhere. Sea level will rise, wiping out whole villages and coastal towns, glaciers will melt, and our economy will also suffer because our tourism will decline. Permafrost will melt, turning most of the interior (where I live) and the north into mud soup. Whole neighborhoods, roads, and ecosystems will be swallowed by the earth. The funny part is, whether we try to stop it or not, humans will have to change the way they live to adapt to the changing climate.

I would keep commissions open during the year, but I have no time with school.

Guinea pigs? huh? Very cool! I used to have a few, but my dad killed them. I hope you will share photos.

I do feel for all those animals, the polar bears, the seals, the walrus, the otters. I really don't want to see the rain forests and the tundra, gone, I even want to visit the rain forests and maybe even see the interior. I really don't want to see Russia, Canada, Alaska, Norway, turn into a giant mess of mosquito, I think they are one of the prettiest places in the world, but it seems we can't do anything to stop it. Even if people see what they are or what they aren't doing, they still won't stop, and if the climate change isn't human's fault, what will be able to do then? I don't like change, but I've learned to take the good with the bad. Texas might be a desert in the near future, I will feel for the land, when I was a little kid, I loved going to the Piney Woods, seeing the animals, the trees, the soft wind petting my hair, the overall majesty of the place, when I visited I never wanted to leave, ever, but alas I am still young. I don't like anaerobic bogs, nor deserts, but in time there will be some beauty out of it despite the once vast forests and glaciers. I don't want to see the live bearers die, I don't want the ocelots to leave, nor the mountain cats, I don't want coyotes and scorpions invading the land. I don't want to see Houston, Corpus Christi, Galveston enveloped in salty marsh, I love those places to death. It's just, even if we did something I don't think it would be in time, and even now we can already see the fear nature has, rainforest species migrating northwards, birds traveling farther north, butterflies wintering in places where they arent supposed to be. I don't like it, but, It's something we have to endure.

Yep, hopefully I can share pictures of them, I'd be glad to.
