He truly is. I remember I didn't even like him that much at first, (kinda apathetic, though I did appreciate his role as an antagonist; liked him better in that regard than Aizen) but that fight with hollow Ichigo really changed my mind. So then I had to go back and reevaluate my opinion of Ulqui. (And reevaluate my opinion of the UlquiHime pairing). But yes, he is really quite sad. When he was standing there, all beat up and then he just started...disintegrating...*sigh* he was one of the few espada I was truly sad to see go. (Grimmjow doesn't count HE'S NOT DEAD YET DAMMIT if this is another Jet phenomenon Imma slap a bitch)

i think there is absolutely some legitimacy to UlquiHime; that was what i found so tragic, that he was so devoid of emotion and didn't understand what it was, and Orihime was the only person that actually piqued his interest in what emotions were. And right before he died and he reached for her OHMYGOD i wanted to cry... i think he felt something all along, and didn't actually realize that what he was feeling was actual emotion until he was already too far gone. i think there was definitely something there, at least from his side-- he just didn't know what it was. i think orihime on the other hand just felt bad for him.

;; so sad. he really is one of the most tragic anime characters i have ever come across.

I know, that's what really has piqued my interest about the pairing. (His last line...so sad in the manga. And then just as sad again in the anime. "I see. This. Yes. This thing in my hand is the heart?") And even while Ichigo fought him in his various battles, he mentions that Ulquiorra seems more 'human', which of course is countered with the idea that Ichigo is more 'hollowlike'. But I think they're both true; Orihime was making an empathetic impact on Ulqi and Ichigo was becoming more hollowlike as a result of being in Las Noches. Nice dualism.

But Ulquiorra is just so tragic, and I realized this belatedly while reading the manga, and it was shoved back in my face while watching the anime. That scene was done so well in the anime. He just...disintegrates. A low-key way to go out for a being who lived an emotionally monotonous life (until the last second).

(And you imply something that I love about Orihime as a character and so many ppl seem to miss: she is unfailingly kind and selfless and empathetic to the core. So many people miss that and hate on the character and I just can't.)

i havent even read the manga scene yet, i heard it's way less censored and a bit more powerful than the way they did it in the anime. i'll definitely have to read it. i also found this which does a pretty agreeable job of deciphering that episode piece by piece if a bit in a biased way XD i think what finally did it for me in the anime was when he was disintegrating, and reflected in his eyes was her and only her, even though ichigo and ishida were obviously present at the same time

plus in the translation i watched, the infamous quote was "her heart was right in my hands," which makes more sense (to me anyway) then the more vague "this thing in my hand is the heart," though both are pretty much saying the same thing.

i have mixed feelings about orihime. she's very much kind and empathetic as you described her, though at times i can't help but feel she is sometimes kind of useless... like she could be doing more. o-o haven't watched enough of the anime to form a complete opinion about her yet though.

Well isn't that just the story of the Bleach anime. Things are far more powerful in the manga, and relationships are far more clear. I read that journal; I have to say she raises some legit points but I think reads far too much into it. (Also, I have a severe dislike for any shipper who rants and rails against any rival ships. So even if they do bring up good points, I can't find legitimacy in their arguments because of the vehemence. ) But I admire the dedication! XD

I dunno, Tite Kubo tends to implement vague dialogue well in intense scenes, which I like. It's also a very Japanese quiality, according to my Japanese phonetics instructor. So I really don't have a problem with the original translation. Much more dramatic, IMO. :3

I know what you mean...when Ichigo got hole-punched (just before he went all AAAAHHH HOLLOW THING GONNA EATCHU) and she was sitting there crying and wailing, I thought for sure she was gonna snap or something. But then she was just all "Kuroasaaaakkiiiii! Help! Heeeelllp!" And I was all, urgh. (But then he came back all awesome and scary so that was cool.) But it does feel like her last moment of awesome was when she owned that hollow waaaaay back when she first got her powers. And that's it. :/

This is what did it for me; what made me rally begin to appreciate Ulquiorra as a character: [link] This is the first time he shows significant emotion, and it just floored me. Because his face almost never changes. Ever.

same, i actually am sometimes kind of put off by people's obsessiveness about pairings.
take avatar for example-- zutara and kataang wars scare the living HELL out of me o_o
i think people should consider the legitimacy of all pairings, but as a general rule, i go by what's most clear canon-wise. which forces me to come to my own informed conclusions based on available evidence when it is not clear canon-wise XD

GOD that bothered me so much, i was sitting there going "okay... are you going to do something?" granted, she did think ichigo was gone and dead for good-- hell he had a giant hole through his chest, he looked dead as dead can look, i think if i was orihime i would've been flipping my shit too if i just saw some demonthing just blow a hole through someone i cared about. i'm guessing there wasn't too much she could do to begin with; ichigo was dead and ulquiorra was proceeding to take down ishida next, and there was no way in hell she could beat ulquiorra, so really she was at a total loss. so, understandable. BUT STILL.

poor ulqui ;; i heard something about kubo refusing to say whether or not ulqui was truly dead. i have a feeling he's going to bring back ulqui and grimmjow somehow, they were both pretty much the most epic espada ever.

Definitely. I may lean a little on the IchiHime side, but if Tite Kubo decides to (officially!) pair Ichigo with Rukia, I'm not gonna get broken up about it. His word is law, as it were.
Besides, especially in fanfiction, it's a lot of fun to read a well-written fanfic for a pairing I wold never have considered.
That said, I extrapolate from unclear canon all the time. Despite what I just said about Kubo's word being law, GrimmIchi is canon, dammit! XDAs is Byakuya/Renji. Mwaha.

Yeah, I know. (Hell, I was flipping a shit when it happened in the manga. I mean, IT'S A GIANT HOLE! WHERE HIS HEART SHOULD BE! I was all 'how is he gonna come back from that? He can't have another trick up his sleeve!' Oh how wrong I was.) It's just she has this extremely powerful, godlike power, and yet she seems so useless. (Which, considering, is an interesting twist of irony. Also keeps her from being a Mary Sue--a stereotype Orihime honestly would never fit anyway. Unlike a certain orange-haired boy. >.>)

OH PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN. I want Grimmy back so baaaaaaad....T^T

Yeah...I think I read somewhere that Kubo wasn't hot on making that decision, since it's a shounen manga and I think he wants to keep the romance to a minimum. but hey. Didn't stop Rumiko Takahashi.

Oh hollow Ichi is freaking badass. The first time we met him, I was all "holy shit. this. is. SO COOL." all that 'king and his horse' stuff and the way more awesome sword techniques than Ichigo...whew. I nearly had a heart attack when hollow Ichi first manifested in Ichigo's fight with Byakuya. (I have that dubbed episode. it's so awesome. best johnny young bosch ever.) honestly, Ichigo's inner world is AWESOME. I mean, Old Man Zangetsu? freaking B.A.

Yeah...this is kinda true. More than kinda. I want Grimmy back. MY GRIMMY KITTY.
