Ah, I see. Yeah, that's how it happens. As soon as they're gone you realize what you missed. Part of life, I guess. WWII was an incredible time. So much history, so many stories. If you see him in uniform, just look at his collar device and google Navy ranks to find out! If you have one of him in his dress blues or whites, you can see his "rating" or job on his sleeve and you can find that online. Might be interesting, if you're up for the search.

yea that is part of life...I agree, its pretty cool knowing that he was part of that history. That is awesome, i will have to try and go hunting for a few pictures now, im sure we have some somewhere, it would be really interesting to see what he did etc. What is your job in the navy?

I'm a nuclear engineer for subsurface propulsion plants. So, in English, I work on the reactors of submarines. I'm a specially trained mechanic just for nuclear systems. Pretty interesting, I guess, but the engineering courses can be pretty boring!

That sounds pretty cool to me lol, eh when you think about it, courses on anything can be pretty boring its all the hands on stuff that is the fun part. That sounds like fun though, how long have you been in the navy? Ive always wanted to join up but never really had the chance, plus id have to take out all my piercings lol

Only about a year now. I enlisted right after I graduated college in May 2010, but it took a couple of months to get shipped off.
It's definitely an interesting lifestyle. And you can still have your piercing when you're not in uniform, so that's nice at least.

ohh, thats still cool thought a year is a pretty long time lol
The lifestyle has always intrested me, and it still does, who knows maybe someday in the near future ill join. I have to many to keep with or without uniform but thats still cool lol

Well, I'm in it for a six year contract so at least I have, uh, job security? Haha. It's not like anything else in the world though. Hard to explain it. You'll become united in your desire to complain about everything. If you're not complaining, you're doing it wrong. Haha. We're like a big family. A bunch of random people all thrown together.

Lol wow, 6 years thats a long time, trust me i know, ive had the same job for 6yrs lol. That works, id rather complain together then all alone, i hate complaining id rather just deal with it and suck it up then complain. Sounds pretty awesome though

I've had a lot of odd jobs over the years, but this one has certainly been the most challenging.
It's not really complaining. Just bitching comically. I feel like it's a thing that's exclusive to the military and I really can't explain it right.

odd jobs can keep things interesting though. im so sick of dealing with the same crap over and over and over and over. it gets boring, i need to get out and do something...
ah i think i understand what your trying to say...well sort of lol

Yeah, I was always doing something fresh. Part of the reason I did the Navy in the first place -- didn't seem like a routine, boring job. Lots of room to do whatever I wanted.

Ha, let's see... Nope! Been stationed in Charleston, SC literally since I've been in. Probably will be in New York next year, and then Hawaii, Guam, or Japan after that. But, still a long time coming! I did live in Australia, but that wasn't Navy related.

funsizedskittles In reply to lemontea [2012-02-15 18:42:58 +0000 UTC]
Aww thats no fun lol but at least there is still the possibility of travel. Australia? thats pretty awesome regardless of navy related or not. In your opinion was joining up rewarding and worth the efforts? Im really considering it again and just wanted your honest opinion...also would you have joined a different military branch if you had the choice?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
lemontea In reply to funsizedskittles [2012-02-16 00:59:26 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I will see the world, I just have to get out of this command first. I'm kind of an exception to the near instant deployment in the Navy. Joining up was worth it. I wanted the experience, and I'm glad I did what I did. It's not always FUN exactly, but it's worth it. I would still stay with the Navy, as much as sailors hate on it. Everyone is critical of their branch, except the Marines, who are batshit insane and crazy proud. Hah.
It's different for everyone. It really depends on what YOU'RE looking for in the experience. I can give you pointers, but it's your decision. What would you want to do in the military?

funsizedskittles In reply to lemontea [2012-02-16 02:56:44 +0000 UTC]
If its worth it then thats what counts...thats pretty much what i was getting toward. The marines are very crazy, i know a few lol
Im looking for something new, something that keeps me busy and on my toes and where i can make new friends and possible travel some. I love being active so honestly im looking forward to the difficulty boot camp and all that bring...yea that probably sounds silly since i have no clue what its exactly like lol....Im not entirely sure, I looked up on being an mp and a few different positions with computers and stuff but im not entirely sure, havent researched the navy as much as i have the army (did a project on airborne army soldiers in high school) so im not completely sure what they have to offer. Thank you though, i know its my decision but its always good to get other opinions on those that have actually experienced it

Well, I am a person who wants to live life with no regrets. I don't want to wonder what if, and I wanted to understand the sacrifice that the REAL 1% of America makes. Now I get to, the good and the bad.
Being active depends on what you do, really. We hardly work out here. Bootcamp really isn't hard. It's a mental game that makes you feel like you can't handle it. The first night, being alone, being screamed at, wondering what the hell you had done -- that is the night that you will never forget. It's the hardest, and every day after that gets easier.
Right now, the Navy and the Air Force have the most jobs that can transfer into the civilian world, though all the branches have a few like that. A lot of it is the culture. Navy and the Air Force are the most laid back. But the Navy has more tradition, and different standards. Personally, I think it's interesting.
And don't worry -- you don't sound silly. I was right there with you before I got in!
