# About me

I'm Alice, I'm from London and I love it. Studying at Manchester University right now (zoology), I love animals, I take photos of plants and insects in the summer, and I like to think I take some nice urban and street photos too. I'm not very pro with the camera, I'm embarrassed to say I've never taken the time to learn about my camera's settings properly and all the other magical things I could potentially do with it.

Manchester is very dull for a taking photographs, for me anyway.

Hope you like my photos :)

I uploaded that photo last night and then checked now if anyone had faved it yet, and you were the first, which was "moments ago" from now... Good timing

thanks, I will be uploading more of him soon. He and his friend on stage are both French (from the Congo or somewhere in Africa).

My friend tells me it's professional and to sell it with a frame, but I would need a model release probably for legal reasons. I don't know if I can just sell photos of musicians.

I just added a whole lot more from that night if you'd care to check my concerts album again.
I feel like my editing abilities have gone up a notch. The lighting was good enough for me to be able to experiment in Lightroom 3 for a brown tinted black-and-white look with lots of contrast and definition.

I see you like my picture Sleep II, which I just renamed Slow II (the sign saws slow of course). I must have been really tired when I submitted it!

For macro I read a lot about adding a reversed lens to a normal lens, but here is a method with only one lens you might like.

So where you find all the flowers and bugs? Is there much in your garden, or is it all parks?

Where in London are you from? On my gap year in England in 2008, I went to London about 5 times. Stayed in Ricksmansworth, Piccadilly Circus and Ascot. Went to lots of museums and 3 art galleries.

Well my mum is into gardens so she plants lots of great plants and flowers. They attract bees and things so I can take photos in my garden. A lot of my photos are taken in the South of France where my dad's friend has a house we sometimes go to in summer. There are loads of great insects there, especially dragonflies by the stream. I take some photos in parks! Some of my photos I took on the safari I went on in Kenya.

I'm from West London (Ealing). It's kind of far out, but I can get to Central London in 20 minutes on the tube. It's useful really. There are loads of great museums, I love them. And galleries! I love it here really.

Where in Cape Town are you? Are you near the coast with all the seals? That's all I really know about Cape Town haha. And that there are sharks in South African waters. I have always wanted to go to South Africa, it looks beautiful there. Do you get to go out to the Savannah or do you have to do it for a holiday?

TheSoftCollision In reply to goASK-alice [2010-05-14 19:28:59 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly the same for me, my mom plants lavender bushes and the bees come.

The dragonfly shots are from two places which are a bit of drive away.

I want to go to London again, to try out street photography that I have been reading about. The city part of Cape Town is run down and not safe, but hopefully it will be improved with the world cup and their will be lots of tourist.

Where in Cape Town, well in 20min I can drive from my house in a green suburbs, past the city buildings and to the Waterfront. Check my photos in my Waterfront album. There are seals there. Or about 30min to get to the beach. We have penguins on some of our beaches too.

I haven't been to the Savannah, that would be like Kruger National Park, where a lot of people go. I have driven through the Karoo though (see my roadtrip album) and we stopped at a game park there. The Karoo is more semi-desert than grassland, so too hot and dry for me.

It sounds really nice in South Africa. I get to go there on a field trip if I go to my preferred university to do zoology. It must be so awesome to have wild elephants and rhinos just a few hours away. I looked at your scenery photos, they're really nice. We don't have any mountains near us to go hiking unfortunately. There is the Lake District in the north which I hope to go to in the summer.

I know someone who knows someone who does street photography in London, he used to have DA but I'm not sure if he still does. If you search 'erainey' on DeviantArt you might find some of his photos. If you're interested.

I actually have family in South Africa but we've sort of lost touch with them and we're not sure exactly where they live.

Thanks for the faves.

Which university are you going to? You have a list of 5 right?
I have heard the Lake District is very nice.

I found an Erainey in London town with no deviations here.

Haha well there's a good chance your family live in Cape Town where I am, otherwise Joburg or Pretoria.

goASK-alice In reply to TheSoftCollision [2010-05-17 20:22:22 +0000 UTC]

That's no problem, you are a really good photographer.

Obviously I didn't look hard enough for him haha.

We can pick 5 universities at first but then we have to narrow it down to an insurance choice (the one that is easier to get into) and a firm choice. My firm is Manchester. I love the city too much so I decided to go to the next largest in the UK It is actually very near the Lake District so I can go walking in the Lakes as much as I want. It's really lovely in the Lake District, my mum's family is from there. Only thing is it rains a lot, but that's not unusual here in England.

I saw the personal quote bit on your page, are you really colourblind? Haha.

Thank you, I try to be very professional and my photos are getting better as I figure out techniques and my camera.

I photograph a wide variety of subjects as you can see as I learn totally different techiques from each. I mean I just did a fashion shoot of sorts with friends and I have learnt what that requires for aperture (f/2.8 or f/11), lighting (shade), how far away to stand (a couple of metres so they are not distorted).

I focus on bands and macro work (I started on macro first, that's why I take lots of guitar close ups). It's cool that you have the ability and equipment for lovely macro and nature shots and I am sure you enjoy it a lot.

Haha no I'm not colourblind, I just have random moments of jokes like that. You can read more on my blog. [link]

I'm off to bed, have an accounting exam in the morning. Chat again soon.

That's really good that you are trying out all sorts of different photography. The experimentation is paying off! I never really try to do any other sort of photography, I don't know how to use my camera manually (I just know the basics of manual). It's really bad, I should play around with it.

Your band photography is really good, nice colours and stuff. Your macro is also really good, you can get such good closeups! I can never really get that close, those dragonfly photos especially are so close!

I do enjoy macro and nature photography a lot, I find I'm quite good at it even if I do have to take loads of shots to get one good one! (I haven't quite mastered the skill of holding the camera absolutely steady). I never owned the macro lens I wrote in the tools of the trade section :S I don't know why I put that down, I think I was going to get a 60mm so I put that in, but got the 105 instead.

Accounting, sounds fun... I have a chemistry exam on friday so I can't talk. Hope you did well in the exam.

TheSoftCollision In reply to goASK-alice [2010-05-18 19:49:04 +0000 UTC]

It's hard to be inspired to do macro when the weather is bad, or the bees aren't where I hoped they would be.

I've never been stung taking photos, but I've had a praying mantis leap onto my arm, which I couldn't shake off because I had a camera in my hand, but didn't want to touch it with my other hand. 5 second panic then got it off.

I finished my accounting exam a minute or so early when I expected to be short on time.

I know what you mean with holding the camera still.
Many insist on a tripod for macro.
But for handheld in general I read that you're supposed to breathe out and then hold it there and tae a photo, since your body is still and relaxed (while breathing in tenses you up).
