No problem. I finally aquired an anvil, so hopefully it won't be too long before I forge some blades of my own.

well, I suggest starting with simple blades suchs as daggers, because the greatest way to lose interest in forging is to start with something really challenging like a sword... because many of my classmates started with guns blazing like "imma make me a big-ass katana!" without forging so much as a nail before that, all of them ended with a pile of bent metal and a lost interest in forging

I believe I remember quite some time ago you gave me the adise "forge a thousand nails before you try forging a sword" I can completely see why! Will let ya know when I eventually make my first sword.

ok good and I know this will sound like some b-class kung-fu movie ClichΓ©, but its still true; you will propably fail many times, but just keep trying until you succeed, because thats what I did. what you need more than skills to become a master is stubborness.

no problem. it's a stunning piece! i hope to try my hand at forging a sword as soon as i can set up a forge and anvil.

trust me, forge a thousand nails before you even think about forging a sword, its nowhere nearly as easy as it seems to be. many of my schoolmates who never had forged anything came to the forge thinkin "Im gonna make a sword!" and left 2 hours later with something resembling more of a hockey stick than a sword. I did that too the first time I got my hands to a forge and realised that its not that simple to forge anything, even a decent knife blade takes hours of practice, so don't be disappointed at the start because so many do.

i appreciate your advice, thank you. indeed i have put allot of thought into it and recognize it'll take allot of practice to get anywhere near good enough, either way i have to sort out an anvil, forge a set of tongs, mandrils, flatters ect and build the forge itself. I've had some practice and training from an old smith, he says i'm good at keeping my hammer level and even swings, and knowing how much force to apply depending on the metals temperature, and am good at drawing out a thin even edge, i just need to work on managing my fire and getting the temperatures right more then anything. so I'll be interested to put myself to the test and work on my skill, see if what i come up with is anything half decent! ha ha.Β
kind regards: gothjosh

well you seem to have a good basis to start off then a good anvil is usually the hardest one to get, and the rest you can basically make yourself, and if you can't find a decent anvil, a piece of railroad rail will do fine as a temporary anvil.

hopefully so, thank you. yeah, so i have found! ha ha i have ideas on how to make one though that should do the job. and defiantly! all that is the easy part I'd say. and thank you for the suggestion, I've seen quite a few peoples home made railroad anvil designs, should be fairly straight forwerd if i can find a piece somewhere.

well it doesen't even have to be a railroad piece, any sturdy and heavyΒ enough chunk of metal can be used for makeshift anvil, go around some metal scrapyards and see what you can find. allthough a rail is a good one because its hardened, so it can take a beating unlike some mild iron blocks wich tend to deform very easily, but its really all about how heavy forging you will be doing

indeed, well my dad tells me he might have something that'll work, he didn't say what, but I'll find out soon enough! ha ha thank you for the ideas. well i do intend to do some heavier work as i develop my skills, i plan on forging a type of viking battle axe you may have heard of called a "skeggox" but that'll take allot of skill to get right!

oh ok well the "bearded axe" will require some forge welding and/or hot incision and some heavy hammering to get doe, but its always trial and error with forging and smithing, good luck with it!

indeed, well i know the back lugs will be a challenge to weld properly, I've watched some instructional videos by "james austin" so i have a rough idea of how I'll do a more simpler version that might be more achievable. thats exactly what my friend the blacksmith told me! and again thank you sir.Β
