I'd prefer to trust myself over believing.

Amd yet isn't trust a belief in the consistency and vilidity of ourselves?

Perhaps, if you feel trust requires consistency and validity.
I don't think quite along those lines. Trust is not always proved even if one has it. Trust can also operate on flexibility and adaptability.
You talk of trust as equatable to the expected, developed by routine.
I do not disagree however that there would need to be a reliable awareness of ourselves for such trust to be well placed.

Trust needs consistency in the sense that if you cannot know how something will act / react to you, you cannot trust it. To trust is to believe that one can rely on, and if you can't predict how something will act, you can't rely on it.
Trust needs validity in the sense that you need to believe that your trust is valid. Just knowing something will be consistent doesn't mean that it will accept your trust. Because by trusting you are changing the individual or system which you expect to act a certain way, causing it to possibly change it's actions/reactions. Trust then becomes the mutual understanding that you may rely on it, or vice versa, validating it.
To believe in yourself, you know and rely on your modes and styles of action/reaction, and have come to terms with this knowledge. When you can believe in this consistency and in the validity of this arrangement, you trust yourself.
As you say, this is not a state of proof. You cannot actively prove that you have come to terms with yourself... but it is rather like a synchronicity that is created through belief.
Obviously, you can't know yourself enough to rely on yourself without a measure of self awareness.
