Ack!! I really wanted to look at your work - but it is not uploading. Deviantart is being.......well, deviantart. I will try to look later. What I have seen is wonderful. Although I do a lot of oils, charcoals will always be my first love - and I love seeing a well done drawing. Keep up the wonderful work, and I will be back later !

I love your work. I have a particular fondness for horses and cowboys. Your oils are beautiful. Your charcoal is excellent. I may do some more charcoal as time goes by. I like the detail you get in yours. Most charcoal drawings I see here are very βsoftβ, and thatβs not my style. I like the tight control I can get with graphite pencils, but I donβt particularly like the shininess or the difficulty in getting dark blacks. Perhaps I just need to get braver and jump into charcoal with both feet (if you will pardon the metaphor). Do you have any tips as to how I could get the detail and range that I want with charcoal (something like your βHereford Loveβ drawing)?

Yes . There are some things that I have learned through trial and error over the years that will save you a lot of frustrations working with charcoal. (Actually, everything I have learned is through trial and error as I am self-taught, and I am continually learning something new with every piece I do.) I have used pencil as well, but I love charcoal for the reason that you mentioned - you can get a lot richer, darker blacks and shadows using charcoal. It is going to take some room, however, so I am going to send you a note instead of writing on your profile
And thank you, by the way

Thank you.
I just looked at your gallery. Wow! Your drawings are amazing! Could you please provide more information with your posted drawings? I believe others would be interested to know the size of the original as well as what they were drawn with (colored pencils I assume) and what type of paper you are drawing on. I know I would.
I also see that you are an architectural designer. I too am from that world. I have been working as an architectural draftsman and CAD Guru for all of my adult life. Welcome to DA. I havenβt been here long myself, but I have been on RedBubble for over a year now.

Thank you very much.
I just looked at your gallery. Very nice! Your drawings are wonderful. I wish I could get my portraits to come out as nice as yours. I would love to know how you achieve your smooth skin tones. I just added you to my watch list.
Thanks again and keep in touch.

Thanks for the watch and wonderful words of encouragement! When I'm serious about a drawing (not just a sketch) I start out with a harder lead pencil, like a 4H or 2H and draw everything basically in cross hatches, then I'll go in and cross hatch even more with a 2B lead (I use a mechanical pencil) then I will come in with a soft bristle brush and, using circles, start blending. Sometimes I have to repeat the process a few times in certain areas to get the depth I want. Then I'll come in with a darker lead to finish up darks, and erase out highlights. If I'm just sketching I use a dark lead wood pencil, like 4B, and I'll use an artists chamois for blending.

Thank you for sharing your technique. It ever occurred to me to use a bristle brush for shading. Iβll have to give it a try.

Yeah, try all kinds of brushes. I use strong little brushes for darker spots, very soft sable brushes (in circles) for cheeks and soft leather, etc. I like brushes better than a tortillion for large shading spots; those can really make "streaky" shading in bigger areas.

I definitely will give it a try. This makes me want to do another portrait. I am drawing an old chain and an old rusty door right now. Thanks for sharing. Keep in touch.
By the way - people think it odd that I like the Sponge Bob Square pants cartoons.

Thank you for the lovely compliment! I was just looking at your gallery. It reminds me a lot of where I was several years ago when I stopped drawing. I was doing a lot of colored pencil drawings back then. For now, I have decided to slip back to my first love, graphite pencil drawing, but I still appreciate a good colored pencil drawing and yours are real good. Thanks for following me and I hope I donβt disappoint you. I am on an animals kick right now. I am currently drawing a bull. Let me know what you think of it when I post it. I will be watching for your comment.
P.S. I just put you on my watch list as well, so keep drawing!
