I think your work is magic. After many years in the business, there are 2 things that matter.
The first is originality.
The second is a healthy CV.
You have the originality stakes hands down.
Take these wonderful ideas, don't let anyone influence them no matter how many dollars they wave at you. Enter your best works in Art Prizes all over the place. (avoid putting dates on your work, that way you can recycle them into other prizes). Put your wins on a CV and spread your work to galleries far and wide. Put in the effort online to find places that look like home. Don't waste time if it doesn't feel right. Your first customer is the Gallery Owner. If they love your work and you think theyre genuine, that will translate to the customers, who need reassuring. Price your work at a "fair" price. It should feel "right" , not sad, or over the top. Gradually move your work to where your audience is. Where theyre selling the most, at the best price without being discounted or crunched.
If you're asked to do commissions, don't accept unless you're free to be yourself. Compromise will murder your spirit, and in the end you will not love your job. Your love for your work IS your currency. Fight hard and fast to keep it.
I hope this helps you on your way.
Greg

Thanks Greg for your encouraging comments. Yes my c.v. is tiny at the moment, all I have on it is that I was a finalist in a Portraiture Prize earlier this year (typp.com.au). Still, im trying to score the Top Gallery, in Salamanca, Hobart, for sometime next year. They are the only gallery in hobart who are solely oriented towards emerging artists, and charge no fee, nor commission. That said, it is pretty competitive.
I have also been quite busy these past few months, as I am currently studying towards a bachelor of music (jazz guitar), at the conservatorium in Hobart. Over summer, however, i plan to be wood shedding music, and painting everyday.
I would love to enter more prizes, as you suggest, do you know of any in particular that you think would attract my work? It is slightly difficult for me, living in Tasmania.
Also, do you have any advice on pricing my work? I have never sold my pieces, but I will need to have them for sale if I get the show in Salamanca next year. I.e., how much should i ask for an oil such as this, which is about 100cmx75cmx4cm in dimension? [link]
Sorry about all the questions Greg, I will understand if you do not wish to answer them all. That said, your advice is welcome, and taken seriously. If you're ever in Hobart, and want to catch up for a coffee, let me know.
I am passionate about painting, and I really want to be able to make a living from art (and music/music teaching), if I can. Nothing will every compromise my need to paint.
Cheers,
Harry

Wow I think the combination of art and music is a really productive choice. I do the same. They seem to feed each other. But you dont have to switch the creativity off to shift back and forth.
As for prizes, does Hobart have an Art Society? If so, its a good place to start. Art magazines frequently have up coming competitions published in them, usually too soon to whip something up, but if you have a stock of work, then pick your best.
Ill see my friend from Hobart at our regional exhibition tonight, so Ill ask her for advice.
Im going in the Glover in Launceston in Feb/March. Have a look at the website, get an idea of previous entries and winners, but never assume you need to adjust style to compete. Originality is always the criteria. As for other competitions, like I said , take your time Googling. Its usually a shitload of too much information, not enough clarity, but worth dedicating some time to.
Ive taken Geoffrey Dyers advice and am entering as many as I can find/afford/qualify for.
He says thats what the well knowns did previously to get where they are. Exposure directly through Exhibitions and competitions, not through friends cafe walls or piddly tourist galleries.
What kind of jazz are you into (apart from Reinhardt)

Cheers, yeah im going to try and enter the Tasmanian Art prize next year, and also the youth portriature prize again.
I'm into quite a lot of jazz, amongst my favorites would have to be Kenny Burell, Al Di Meola, John Coltrane, Joe Pass, Angello Debarre, and Stochello Rosenberg,
Cheers,
Harry

Good taste fella
I was listening to 2 young backpackers down the esplanade some weeks ago. They were playing the Al DiMeola/Paco Delucia Mediterranean Sundance piece. Ive heard people try and play it but not with the sense of rhythm of those 2. But these guys really had it nailed.
Im nothing like that myself. Much more your Nick Drake type.

thanks for the reply. Yeah, I am not a religious person, but I definately do understand about tuning in with a higher presence whilst painting....a great way of adding grace, and cultivating beauty in one's work.
By the way, as a full time artist, do you have any advice on how to successfully make a living from your art? I have never held an exhibition, but I am trying to get one together for next year... my goal is to survive from painting, and teaching music...
cheers

Beleive me dude i am as far from religion as can be
But it's not all bad, every institution and organisation has it's fuckwits and it's dudes.
But god knows who god is and all you have to do is ask.
I think there is no right way to give respect to god either, and i guess painting is my way.
As far as exhibitons and that go, start of small...even if you have a few friends around for drinks. Don't let your ego get in the way of selling your art take what you are given, because if that person is willing to buy it then they will care for it and otheres will see that.
Here an idea too...print out some little pictures of your work and go to the nearest market with them...make sure they are printed on a little cheap canvas...and even varnish them...so the have a painterly touch
I also suggest just doing a little bit of busking...just take one of your peices out in the street...best to take one that your almost finished...so people can see what you do( plus it gives you confidence). Say you are broke and you need money for your next canvas...which will more than likely be true . Take each comment to heart and understand that even the cruel can give you confidence in what you don't want to be
Take things slowly and your talents will grow organically and the confidence that you get from showing your pics publicly and having to expalin them to people will inevitably show up in your next piece.
As far as surviving on your art is concerned...that is relative to what you need to survive...for some people it's just food, water, air , and love. That's how it was for me when i was starting out.
Unify yourself with your surroundings and the rest just takes care of it's self. It's just like a painting, although you don't know what it's gunna look like at the start, it's beleiving in an imagined image that drives you forward.
Don't worry about the money to start off, it's a tool like anything else. Find yourself first, and once you are confident in that, selling your art will be easy because your not really selling your art...truthfully your selling yourself
i hope that is some help to you man.
peace

Thanks for the watch and comments.
I think your stuff is fabulous and will be adding some to my collection once I work out how to do this sort of thing.
You have a fantastic imagination and your understanding of how to successfully use bright colours is excellent.
Hope you manage to find the time to get it all together for your exhibition.

Sounds like everything is going great. Sydney is good, Imogen and I have our own place now, pretty pleased about that. School is alright, hard to keep on top of everything cause i'm doing an intership Mondays and Fridays and work placement on Wednesdays. Learning a lot of new skills and stuff though. Look forward to seeing your new painting. Take care.
