I love the Mat-Su! We owned property in Wasilla for a while but it got too damned big so we sold it. I still like visiting the area though. Partner's real dad lives in Chugiak and we used to race stock cars at Capitol speedway in Willow.

The area has changed a lot. Wasilla especially has gotten VERY built-up. It looks like an Anchorage suburb now.

You wouldn't believe how the main highway looks now. It's like a major city freeway with overpasses and such. They've crammed in so many new buildings and people are just pouring in. Partner and I had an acre of land overlooking the bluffs just off the highway but in the course of ten years they built two apartment complexes above us, three restaurants and a strip mall. We gave up hopes of building a house there and sold the land but at least we made twice our money back!

At least that's a plus.
The whole rennovation is just terrible though, in my opinion. There's nothing "Last frontier"-y about that kind of... I don't know what I want to call it. Debauchery seems kind of harsh.
Do you mean the Glenn Highway? Because that stretch of road made a big impression on me.
We lived in Alaskan suburbia, I suppose, but it was still very nice because of all the space. I do know that as soon as we moved, the new owners put in a huge eyesore of a shed. I'm sure they've cut down all the trees between the fence and the creek... So sad.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. It looks more like Portland or Seattle now than Alaska.

I'm talking about the Parks Hwy after it splits off from the Glenn.

I know what you mean about going back to look at your old place and seeing what sort of crappy shit the new owners did with it. When we went back to look at our old lot there in Wasilla, we saw that the new owners had clear cut it save for one little clump of trees and built a godawful yellow house that looks like a cheap stick of margarine. Just sad...

We never lived there. We just owned the lot with the plan on moving there eventually. The house was built around 2005 or so.
