A Walk


There is muddy gold on the trees and faded silver in the sky.

I’m going to go on a wander.

To get to where I want to go, you have to cross a main road - it’s like the River Styx, in a way; the land of the living on the one said, and the land of the dead on the other. Everything moves with its own life force on this side, and on the other, only the wind moves.

Sitting down on a riverbank, I read the first two scenes of Hamlet. Inevitably, sitting here, reading that book, my mind turns to ghosts. The wind whistles above, carrying the spirits - those of the executioners - the hangmen who lived in the cottage just down the river, those of all their victims, the spirit in the wind of the child swaying slowly on the swing on the opposite bank.

The wind carries the howls and moans of countless widows. They get caught up in the weeping willow, and trickle down into the river.

They get washed along with the detritus of modern life, joining the ghosts of a million tiny creatures in the plastic. They flow past the ghosts of old useless floodgates.

I remember a couplet I heard:
“The colours of autumn are full and strong,
But enjoy them now, they don’t last long.”
The plant in the pot of the house down the road,
Bare limbs of silver. The man cutting off fresh growth,
Ready for winter. Slowly creeping cold and biting wind,
Every day harsher. And the far-off haze
That frames these clear autumn days.
Leaves tumbling: this is a windfall
More valuable that any currency.

Answer to yesterday's question: when its been raining. Damn british autumn! If only I didn't love it so...! But it really is beautiful. I think I'm going to start taking the digital camera around with me to take photos of the soggy-cornflake leaves and the bare branched trees. Also, the hills of surrounding are an amazing green in the morning, bordered by grey sea clouds with the Castle of Maidens rising up through it - really breathtaking.

When is it right to wash your hair? Or more specifically, when is it right to wash your hair when you have hair that goes really fluffy and gignourmous after you wash it that makes you look like a fool?
