Alright, get ready for a somewhat long response here as I take you through my process,

so i always sketch traditionally and when I'm satisfied with the rough I scan it/ take a picture and upload it to a program that I'm comfortable using. In my case I use my Ipad, but the same coloring concept is the same for all programs across the board.

The next step is really vital to how the picture is going to turn out, its line art. Line art can be the difference between a really good picture and a really bad one no matter how good of a coloring job it is. You want to avoid those really squiggly lines because it comes off as unprofessional, so if you're on a tablet, quick strokes are the key, (you're not going to get the perfect stroke the first time so undo is your bestest friend) or the other option is vectored lines. 

As for weight of the lines, I try and not to make them too thick because my coloring doesn't call for heaviness of lines, the general rule I'm sure you know is thicker lines for outlines and thinner lines for detail. my pen range is from pt 6-16 for an average painting

come coloring time, I start with the flats, doing the flats helps me construct the feeling and mood of the piece and making sure there are no clashing colors and makings sure the colors blend to create the atmosphere that I want.

From that we move onto the coloring, I do soft cell shading (I think it's called) so this part I start with shadows and move to light and continue making changes until I'm completely satisfied

ultimately the drawings are so polished because I invest time and effort into the drawing trying to make it the best it can be. A normal drawing for me can go from 2-5 hours because that want to make it appealing to others,

my best advice for you would be to give every art piece your best shot and with some time you'll improve and become better, you'll even surprise yourself!

ah I've heard of that app, yeah three layers are difficult, getting the full version I think would be in your best interest, just keep in mind though, the higher the resolution the less amount of layers you'll have, that's the con of using apps and tablets, they just don't have the capacity that a computer has, maybe one day though, it'll happen

Personally I use Artstudio which did cost like 5 but it's almost exactly like photo shop and Sai X3 and the features are so useful

then again I could just be biased xD
