I paint too and I love it. My suggestion would be to paint traditionally first and worry about digital later. You will always learn better but starting with traditional first as you learn faster and better by being hands on and not letting the technology get in the way. Also practice, practice, practice.

I totally agree with you. I also believe all artists should begin in traditional media. I did a lot of traditional illustration in high school and college but when I was introduced to painting it changed my perspective on art(some time ago). However, art supplies were getting to be expensive (family man now) so I decided to get the next best thing to traditional media, Corel Painter 11 and CS4.

But think of how much paint and canvas you could have bought for the price of Corel Painter and CS4? I can only offer this personal story. I waited in vain for zbrush 3 to come out on mac and to be able to afford a new computer Problem is my old computers aged and weren't powerful enough and to get really responsive detailed work. I needed more and more and more and I could not afford it. It was the art equivalent of chasing the dragon. I spent the money I could have used for 1/2 of a new computer on a class and got my hands on real clay and I learned to sculpt in a fraction of the time it would have taken to learn in digital with much better results. Same thing with painting and Photoshop. The color spectrum is larger and more saturated, the blending is incredibly flexible and the detail is virtually unlimited with real paint. I am learning to draw and paint faster and better after I ditched the computer as my primary art tool. The amount of money and time you have to invest in digital systems to just try and break even with traditional paint and ESPECIALLY with clay is enormous and disproportionate. Same thing with Photography, how do I get high resolution, enormous logarithmic dynamic range, deep color, raw originals and super shallow depth of field for $200.00 or less? Shoot film again. Everything as gotten better going away from digital as the primary tool. I'm just offering up my opinion. Here it is one more time: Stay on the forefront of technology so you know how to use it and how to create hybrid workflows with digital and analog and then do primary work in analog and you will get higher quality results, learn faster and pay a tiny fraction of the price. Then you when you transfer what you have learned to digital it will be better and take less time to create. Sorry for my long winded, rambling soapbox speech. Hope it helps!
