Hey, remember me? It's been years since I used deviantART, but when I heard about a disaster on an oil rig in the Gulf, I had to check in and see whether you were still working in that area. I hope you're safe; the eleven people working on the Louisiana rig that blew are missing, and I don't imagine they're coming home. If you're still out there, let me know, ok?

jkrende In reply to magicalgirl [2010-05-13 16:44:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, sorry for the delayed response but I do indeed still work in the Gulf of Mexico, and for Transocean, but that was not my oil rig. Still, I knew a number of people on the DWH, including the Captain. I'm fine, just now got off my rig, and all is well with m.

Say a prayer for the men who went down with the Horizon.

Just finished a temporary work assignment in South Korea, next I head to Durban, South Africa and pick up the drillship Discoverer Clear Leader and bring it back to the US Gulf of Mexico. I have been so busy the last year I haven't written *anything* but I do have some good ideas, one of which I'm kicking around fairly regularly which means at some point it will find it's way onto the screen.

What's up with you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

danielzklein In reply to jkrende [2009-04-06 13:02:22 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! How was South Korea? Did you hear Jaedong won the OSL? (SPOILER! )

I'm living in Dublin now, liking it quite a bit. Good place to live. Writing this and that, currently investing most time into a website I'm developing for someone and a little browser game I'm writing just to see if I can (answer so far: if I use libraries that hundreds of open source volunteers wrote to make me look good, I can!) (PEAR and jQuery ftw). Also tinkering still from time to time with the play and thinking of coming back here to give somewhat regular critique again because at the very least I'll be thinking about literature (and of course it'll make me feel better about myself to read the dA standard of writing )

Korea was not at all what I expected it to be, and yet it was very much what I expected in that I assumed I was going to be surprised and delighted and I was. I spent the better part of a year there, working 28 days on and 28 days off, and now I'm done and headed home and I can say I'm both relieved and kind of sad... it's very hard to describe what it's like in Asia, but one thing I can say for sure is I wouldn't have missed it for the world. It's a riot of activity and a completely alien mindset from what we are used to as westerners. Also, the bar scene is VERY alien.

Dublin huh? Never been to Ireland, it's one place I would love to go.

I have mixed feelings. I need to get off my ass and get published, but I also know I won't make a living at it, although a little extra money on the side would be nice.

And yes, I do feel you about the DA standard level of writing. Sometimes I wonder about the schools in this world.
