Well, just don't do what everyone else did, which was use the fuzzy stuff. It looks horrible with that.
Personally, I think you did very well with it. I think it works better your way because... 1: you could actually tell it was supposed to be fire, no just an orange ball of fluff. 2: Since Calcifer is essentially an anime character, it works better to present him in the 2D, front & back view like you did. (Especially since he's semi-transparent.

P.S. Sorry, that's kinda alot for a note... ^_^"
