I would go through time era's of cloths and collect ideas. Search through A TON of artist as well and collect ideas (Don't steal outfits, just collect ideas) in school research is the KEY to success so do a lot of it. And don't worry about making it perfect the first time, make a few different quick sketches of outfit ideas and then pick the top two or three and from that pick the best and refine until you get something you like.
