I'm okay. It's like 7:30 and i'm going to get ready for bed. LoL I feel like such a kid getting ready for bed so early, but I have to get up for work at 4:45 every day. Blah! Do you have a job or are you in school, or what?

And haha, I wish I got that much sleep. I've been getting up at 4-5 am every morning for as long as I can remember... I'm still in school but I do have a part time job aside from working on our farm. I work at a local alpaca breeding farm training their young crias and preparing them to be shown next month

You get up early because you live on a farm? Oh, that's cool! I worked on an alpaca farm too for a while! But I just cleaned up all the poo and fed them and stuff. LoL

I don't live on it, wish I did though The farm is owned by old family friends of ours. And wow, that's so cool!! I'm a trainer, I've been working with alllll kinds of llamas and alpacas, including abused, wild and babies, for about 3 years now. COuldn't imagine anything better

So how did you get into training the alpacas and such?
Do you get spit on much? I used to get spit on all the time. God does it stink; sheering was the worst. . . . well actually when we had to weigh them was the worst, I got spit on a LOT that day. How many hours do you put in to training them? We didn't do to much training where I worked.

My grandma used to work at my old school, and she got to know the librarian, who happens to be the mother of our 4H leader. My grandmother told her about my love for animals and hands-on activities, and about my artwork (I'm a fiber artist), and suggestedthat I check out the 4H group that her daughter led. So, I went to the soonest meeting, where I met the members and the alpaca I now own and have trained since the day I joined, Irish: [link] He's my boy, love him to bits I'm now a multi show champion and the president of my group, and I was given another alpaca in March of last year, Tuco: [link] He's my trick boy, I focus with him on clicker-trained, fun tricks. So yeah, I'm just an alpaca owner for pleasure.

And I have to say I've been spit on more than I can count. although both my boys are trained against spitting, they do occaisionally give a good spit. I've worked with many animals who aren't trained, or even abused/neglected, so they're the ones quick to fire. And I found that a good spray bottle full of water is a good deterrant to spitting

I normally spend 2-3 hours at least 3 times a week training, alternating between Irish and Tuco. For the last month I've been going every day to treat Irish for a tooth abscess, although he's nearly completed his treatment and looks much better than when he started

It sounds like you worked on a larger scale farm, was it a breeding farm? In which case, breeders normally don't train, usually you'll train an animal if you plan to show it in competitions that involve classes such as obstacles or handlers

That's really cool. I love animals! But I don't I would have ever been to into 4H.

Really? We used to spray the alpacas with the hose in the summer, because they liked it. LoL

I'm glad that your alpaca is getting better.

Yeah they have a huge farm. Around 70 alpacas and 3 or 4 llamas. They do breed them, but they hire a bunch of young kids who have a habit of leaving gates open so we had a lot . . . unplanned breedings. Yeah, and we had such a wonderful time separating all 70 of them.

Haha it's a lot of fun, but very dramatic lately

And yes!! it's best to spray just their bellies and legs though, spraying them completely down will weigh down and stretch the crimp and act as a sauna as the water dries.

And oooohhhhh, I see. I bet that was an adventure, surprise crias!!

Yeah? That's what we were told to do, but we never knew why. LoL

Oh yeah. . it was a bad time. Happened more than once to. Plus I occasionally let them out by accident and then had to round them up myself. blah.
