Weeellll, you CAN play D.A. II without having finished D.A. Origins, but there'll be concepts that you won't understand, for example, the basic plot of the mages and templars, besides of other concepts, like what are abominations! And the words they use, and other stuff. But you can read every info you need on the internet, or from the game itself.

What's good from finishing D.A.O. and THEN playing the second game, is that every little thing you did in the first game will affect the second game~

My opinion about the matter would be to first buy the first game, besides, a lot of people say that it's waaaay better than the second -I stick with them, but the graphics are tadhahassa...- You'll not only get the basic ideas of the whole plot thingy, but there're are more options for your character, and you can choose not only if you want to be a mage, warrior or rougue, but you can choose to be a human, elf or dwarf -option not available in the second game-

So, if you buy the first game you'll have plenty of hours to finish it, and believe me, you'll fell in love with Alistair... -Altough my first love was Zevran heh -

That's my point of view~ I can make a resume for you about the plot of the first game XD or you can read the info in the Dragon Age wiki, it's really usefull, believe me XD
