# About me
Not much to say, I'm 23 years old, live in Quito, Ecuador. I never attended art school and that's my biggest regret. I study medicine but my love for art has its roots deep in me. I draw on my free time, and when I'm supposed to be working. Those that know me know there are many facades within me, but in general I'm like a wolfmother to my few friends and like a lurking viper to my enemies. To the rest I'm like a crow or a vulture, just sitting around waiting and observing. Other than drawing I like to write, compose, photograph, play (videogames, board games and rpg's), and read. Not much more to be said I guess, you're free to ask anything you want to know (I am free to deny the answer as well if I see fit haha)# Comments

Good to hear you're using reference, I really think it makes a great deal of difference.Β I keep having to remind myself that though I use reference from time to time I should not be a slave to it, meaning I should not feel compelled to be faithful to every detail I have observed- rather one should take what serves their vision and ignore anything going against it.Β Models can be tricky to get, though even a snapshot of a friend taking a quick pose can still be very useful.
Part of the contrast could be due to adjusting my scan's levels in Photoshop, which can allow the paper to equate to pure white and the darkest graphite to be pure black.Β However, I did use some very soft/dark leads, 6-9B or so, and if built up carefully enough it can get very very dark.Β I have read that some use charcoal pencil for the black areas because it makes less of a glare than graphite, I think this is a better solution for viewing the art in person, though the scanner seems to ignore the glare effect.Β One other thing worth mentioning, especially with the Mi-Go image, is that I carefully composed the brightest areas to be surrounded by the darkest in order to provide the most contrast in the important areas, making the lights look lighter and the darks appear darker.Β It's all trickery, I tell you!

Thanks for the tips! I've been doing the same scanner adjustmentΒ on my drawings, since the scan will always look lighter than the real piece, but now that you mention it, better composition should improve both quality and contrast. I will try to use models a little more, and certainly try not to be restrained by them! Thanks again for the tips man! And keep up the awesome work with CW, I can't wait to see the newest concepts!

That's really nice! Glad to hear you're on your feet and setting course. Keep it up and cherish the moment
As for me, I worked in a hospital last year, but for community medicine the government rarely sends us to hospitals or clinics. We go to basic medical dispensaries where I have external consult for general medicine, a small procedure room and a small pharmacy. It is in a really bad condition and there's no money from the government to improve, so it kind of sucks haha, besides I'm not only doctor there but statistics department, janitor, security guard, gardener, animal control, pest control, hygiene regulator, engineer, etc. Soo, I don't really think this counts as practice
It would be nice to have you on FB too, feel free to take a look around there Β as well

Oh wow that sounds like quite the experience o__O I guess you're going to learn how to react to a LOT of different situations from working there. Next year do you start residency or are you officially a practicing doctor by then (done all school)?
Yes, I'm just going to keep trying to get in. Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later =\ but I'm volunteering on a sexual assault crisis line and am starting a volunteer position working to rehabilitate people with brain injuries next month too!
I found you on Facebook so we can talk on there ^^

Hope all is well

Holy Cow! What a delightful surprise! I did not expect this haha. How are you? I'm doing fine, though tired most of the time. I'm currently coursing my internship in Metropolitano Hospital (remember that huge building next to the police Hospital I gave you classes in?). I have little time to draw, which is why I make use of any resource and time I have to do so, but yeah, I'm still on this, and plan to get better (hopefully). I have seen little of you guys from EcuaExperience, did you come back sometime? if no, then are you planning to?Β
In Ecuador, as doctors, we are in real trouble since the government passed a law to abide clinical malpractice as a criminal offense instead of a civil offense, so judges will judge doctors as if the meant to kill or hurt the patient. So there's a couple of busy weeks ahead regarding this, probably massive abandonment of public hospitals in protest, dunno. I'm really more interested in art right now, I think I have so much medicine in my daily routine I just need to escape this through painting, writing and drawing!
How are you? Are you still painting? Are you still a gamer or have you grown old?Β

BitterOblivion In reply to lmerlo72 [2014-01-28 03:59:48 +0000 UTC]
Oh wow that's crazy!! When did they pass the law? Congrats on the internship though, that's exciting. I think a few of the people from my group went back to Ecuador this past summer with HLD again for a new building project but I travelled to Portugal alone instead
I really miss Ecuador though, I'd love to go back. I think my next big trip will be to Colombia though. I'm applying to medical school in 8 months!! The school in my city is a 3-year long program followed by residency and specialization. Have you already started into your specialization stuff? I remember you saying you wanted to go into psychiatry?
It's nice to hear that you still fit in some art though. I rarely draw now, maybe once every few months. It's kind of sad. All I do is study! During the summer I gamed a lot, but again I don't have much time now. But I work at a video game store so that's fun! Have you been gaming at all?

Hey, sorry for the late response, I had a hospital shift yesterday... The law was passed last week, so everyone's up and talking about it. It's great some of you do come back here, if I remember correctly they come back as leaders don't they? If you ever do come back let me know! I've heard Colombia is pretty cool too though. Good luck on your application to med school! Yeah I wanted to go for psychiatry as my specialization, and it's still my first choice for now (glad you remember that haha).Β
It's too bad you don't draw too much now, I really liked your work. I keep on drawing even when studying (which makes the studying itself harder ). I will upload a few more recycled sketches soon so you know what IΒ΄m talking about. Awesome! A videogame store? that's wonderful haha, I can imagine you perfectly haha. I do game even now. I'm more into Stacraft and DotA right now, but have a couple rpg's like the witcher waiting in line. I'm also reviving my board gaming group, with Dungeons and Dragons, Starcraft and Cthulhu board games. Imagine all that during an internship? Β

BitterOblivion In reply to lmerlo72 [2014-02-02 16:44:05 +0000 UTC]
It's no problem. Yep a lot of them go back as leaders. I would've loved to go back as a leader but I don't really have time now and last summer I planned my own solo trip and traveled alone for 5 weeks!Β
I have to write my MCAT in August, so I'll be spending my entire summer studying ughhhh -.- Do you guys have a similar entrance exam? When do you get to do specialization stuff?
How are you so high functioning?!! Holy shit you do an impressive amount of stuff for a med student/intern. Also that is so cool that you guys have a board game group. My friends and I really only get together every few weeks to play Settlers of Catan. I mostly game during the summer now. Last summer I got really into this game called Anno 2070. I'm just excited for Elder Scrolls Online to come out in April.
I wonder if I could go be a doctor in South America after I'm done all my schooling lol..
π: 0 β©: 1
lmerlo72 In reply to BitterOblivion [2014-02-04 01:34:21 +0000 UTC]
Well we don't have anything just like the MCAT. We only have our classic university entry exam which is individual to each school. After you finish your 6 years of med school you have to take a licensing exam similar to the USMLE and then go to one year of rural medicine to "pay back to the community", after that you are allowed to practice and look for residencies or specializations inside the country. It is not that I'm THAT high functioning, it is just a matter of organization haha. Yeah, it is cool to have a gaming group, though we can barely organize one game each month, since we are all on different schedules. I have heard a lot of settlers, but never played it myself, is it good?Anno 2070, that sure rings a bell, but not sure what it is about haha maybe just heard the title sometime. Elder scrolls online has my attention as well, but there's this thing about mmrpgs that just grinds my gears haha. I'm not too sure what it is but I would rather a coop RPG such as Path of Exile, Diablo II /III, Torchlight, etc.Β
I am sure you would do great here in south america, we are in need of good doctors (which I'm sure you will be) and awesome people (which I know you are) like you haha. Β Β

There's this sketch in my mom's bosses house that reminds me so much of one of your works. Strangely enough it's hanging above their bed. >3> Anyways it's of a curled up man with an orb of a sort where his head would be. It made me curious if you've ever sold any of your pieces in frames and everything.
