Hello! I've seen you around and wanted to say hey, you're a great artist - and apparently you're Amish ~ I'm quite open-mindedly curious about the Amish lifestyle, I find it very interesting!

Well, in general I'm just curious about the lifestyle and how you guys view everything, such as the outside world (I'm sorry if that term is offensive in any way, I just couldn't find any better way to word it?

Yeah, well the "outside world" is how we describe it ourselves!
In truth, it's a bit harsh, most Amish look at the world outside their community as a place full of sin and want nothing to do with it. That's why 90% of our younger people (says she who is all of 19 years of age XD) stay with the community.Β Even if someone "yanked-over" (That's what we call leaving the Amish community) they usually stay close to where they grow up. The influence is very potent and sticks with you your entire life. I know it must seem really extreme, but you have to understand that we were born into it and it's just our life. It's normal to us. I believe that I'm very lucky to have been born in the Amish community. I'm one of a half-million people and there's 7 billion in the world! Not many can say that.
There are a great many temptations for us. My friends and I haven't yet joined church (or been baptized, it's a personal choice we make when we feel we are ready.) so we're in the "rumshpringa" phase. We go out "yankee", we party every weekend, one of us has been arrested, countless times we've had to run from the police, we smoke, drink and generally have a good time and do whatever we please. Within 3 years we'll all be married with at least one kid,Β guaranteed. That would have scared me 2 years ago but now I can't wait to settle my life and live quietly and productively.
We like to keep to ourselves, and to keep our affairs in our own community. Despite what we look like from the outside I can tell you there is MUCH drama and issues. It's a battle to keep our faith and the way we live alive in the 21st century, with all the technology, and worldly issues. Compared to other Amish families my family and my friends are a lot more. . . liberal, I guess you could say. And that agrees with me. That's why I'm on DA
In the end we are just people living in a way that seems extreme to most of the world, but we're typical people. We're normal human beings, we have the same wants and needs, just without electricity, cars, and the various bits of technology that runs the world right now. I think I explained it as best I could, it's always hard for me to explain these things. There's a lot to tell. . .

Most sites you find about Amish don't really relate to my own community. There are huge differences in the communities of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Canada, New York, even within the states but as a whole we are all Amish. I can barely understand Canadian Amish didn't even know there were Amish in Canada 'til last year! Holmes county and Indiana Amish are allowed to have cars when they're in rumshpringa, in our community we all have smart phones.Β I couldn't live in Lancaster, PA or Canada, too many ridiculous rules and I despise the dresses and bonnets and just the overall look. Holmes county and a few Indiana settlements I'd go for though, if I wasn't happy right where I am.

I have seen such shows as Breaking Amish, and found them to be pretty ridiculous, yeah... but really, it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that the Amish lifestyle is much better than it's portrayed in media.Β
I for one am not religious in the slightest and couldn't even imagine giving up simple pleasures and fun (sinful?) experiences for religious enrichment, but I can definitely understand why people would. ^^
