Indeed, Socialism does not mean Communism... Its like Saying that Christianity means Catholicism.

Socialism has existed since the Classical times, and has its roots on almost every civilization on earth that believe that people together can achieve more than by oneself and another Idea called Utilitarianism (The Reward is reflected on how much work given. The need of the many is more than the need of few).
Socialism does not entirely mean that people does not have freedom, in fact Plato have the idea of a Community should reflect on how itself on its goal, not seperation and individualism. Each people can come up with an Idea to further move themself and their comunity to prosper.

What is wrong about Communism is the people has the right over other people's hardwork. "The people" can take whatever they like so to make "things equal". That's not how its works. If someone works hard on getting something, it is not fair for someone who just lazily do its work to have the equal in value reward. You can't just sleep and expect a corn to grow. It is not fair.

What doesn't sound right in Communism, at least in statehood, is the Idea of one powerful single entity. It is not much different from Despotism and Monarchism, which Government form communists despises. At least in Monarchism and some form of Despotism, there is a "keep check institution" like the Roman Senate, or the Persian Satrapy, or the Islamic Musyawara'. In Communism, and other Totalitarian State idea like Fascism, Falangism, etc, They don't have any "keep check institution", a Parliament if you will. It is no less than Tyranny, a ruler unrestricted by anything. The word of the People, the comunity should and must be adhered to, for it is a way for the state to futher compensate what the people needs to move the working cog of the state itself. Aspirations are always a welcome sight for a better communal, and even more, national prosperity

I tend to avoid Political themes, good chap. ^^
I rather keep my political view to myself, for I don't actually like Political strifes and discussions nor want to embellish myself with my political view, Unless my democratic freedom and right are challenged by the mere Idea of Tyranny, which then I stand up.

I see everyone as a friend, Whichever political spectrum they are in. I have in many times agree with Nationalist, Fascist, Centrist, Socialist, Religious, Capitalist and Communist. There are views that these idealists have that I don't have. They follow an Ideology that proven to be working in some extent. And I respect that, they broadcast their aspirations to make a betterment of their comunity in most cases and its healthy. And that's what defines Democratic Socialists, that we take Democracy as a Social structure

However, its a different story any of them agree to Tyranny and Sadism where they gives a pass to Mass Murder, Human Right violations, and Malevolent ruleship. When they start saying "Killing of X is justified", its a good time to stand away.

All around, the belligerents are well matched.

The Qing Chinese army is more robust though not necesarily better. They are armed with Matchlocks, Pikes and Bows. This is how they looks

The Manchus also have master Horse Archers as we know and its a huge boost in Mobility and adaptability in combat as a unit.

The exact arsenal of the Manchu Qing aren't very specific. They use designations as their calling. Qiang is one tipped Spears and Pikes, Ji and Ge is for Halberds and Dagger Axes, Dao for Sabers and Jian for Longswords.

The Manchu Qing are very well armed and quite disciplined however it lacks what the Napoleonic Era Imperial russia has, Experience and Fighting prowess. They haven't fought a foreign adversary and large and strenous wars like Britain does and this, along with the constant corruption rampant on the regional bureaucracies across Qing's land. They tried to fight the English with attrition and scorched earth technique as well, like Imperial Russia against Napoleon's Army.

Their weapons are simple as well, Brown bess percussion musket among other. They also employ various old guns like Sakers and Demi Culverin types.

What mostly happens is in the Navy, and that is not in my league... However, The British already has Ironclads and Monitors while Chinese got War Junkers and heavy Castle Junks armed with land cannons and carronades.

That's all I know in the most general term.
Extra Credits do a bit more indepth matter about it and some of the Famous battles are mostly naval battles ^^
