I can offer a counterargument. Drawing from life lets you check reference, so you see what it should look like.

...I keep looking at this and wanting to reply, but I keep wanting to ask things like "what kinds of creatures?" and I dunno if that would be silly to ask when you just said you need help with designing them. xP

Well, it isn't really all that silly. I mean, I know I need to design them, and I know the world they are going to live in and what they should be like.
I'm looking for something oddly specific, because I want to make a colored fantasy comic with scenery similar to that of the Mana series designs, but my characters are all grittier and less cartoony. That's why, I would need creatures that would fit a similar color scheme to that of the Mana series, yet be less cartoony in physiology, like the characters.
Anything from moles and rats to dragons all with several modifications and also bizarre and unique stuff, really.
