Kinda yeah, kinda no. Three things are needed for a good criticism. One is good english. This is one of the (nowadays) rare occasions that you need to write verbosely. You need to look professional. If you look amateurish, then you will not be taken seriously.

You need to always find the good in it. It may be that the lines are nice, or the colour is good, or the detail in one place is excellent. This can be as short as one line. Sometimes, heaping on the praise before dropping the bomb can soften the blow to the ego, plus also gives them something that you can focus on. It also can keep them motivated. Then you drop your...

What you want to criticise. This needs to be explained - I thought this section was done poorly this way. This is the guts of the review and you *must* write down what you think fully. If you just dont like it, be honest and say that you just dont like it. Be prepared to hold it up though, and certain reviews will never go down well, so learn to walk away if they dont want the criticism. If you reference other work, please ensure that you can link it. Because its important to show them what you see. If you can suggest how to fix it, do so, and try to link other work (whether your own or others) to clarify it.

Then follow up with you gut instincts, sum it up and read it. If it reads hostile to you, it could be hostile to others. If you think its a bit vague, then beef it up with some examples, or ask to be contacted outside of comments if need be. But remember that, as criticisers, we need to be supportive of the artists first and foremost. If we can help them develop more, then by all means. If it will negatively impact them, then dont leave it. I have walked away before writing one sometimes because of the fact it could be viewed as overly hostile/negative. Look at the comments that you like to read then try and emulate them - you will be pleasantly surprised to the results.

Now... lets make that into a journal entry - its long and *awesome*. Thanks for asking that, though Im pretty sure that you didn't specifically ask for an essay... sorry...

Heh, Wow, that was long, but no big, thanks for taking your time. The grammar issue is really just to shorten the words so i can do stuff faster. But yeah, i will try to be less blunt/brutal.

I may have just thought that the other comments were sugar-coated. Like:'Omg this is amazing' and so on. Just deceitful(kinda).
