holy cow i've just struck gold. let's talk viola-speek

i actually do like the bartok, especially the third mvmt but i...i dunno. i just like the polished and more extravagent-ish sound of the walton. it's probably because mr. walton didnt go off and DIE on us while he wrote his concerto like a certain SOMEbartokONE! it's just that to me, the walton is in the same category that i put all the full-blown concerti, like the mendelssohn in e minor or the bruch in g minor for violins. it just sounds more...full? i do like william primrose but seeing that he's seceased i go with YURI BASHMET i die when i hear his version of the walton. AND THE KOL NIHDRI! or schumann's FAIRY TALES! holy cow that's another killer, i adore the second mvmt are you serious!? shut up right now MY EMAIL is like the SAME THING! it's orchestra_d0rk@yahoo.com someone TELL me that this is not some kind of sign!

Yeah, I get what you mean about the whole incompleted Bartok concerto thing. Walton did revise his concerto a few times(I think it was two...), too. So, I agree that that his viola concerto would sound more refined and polished. From what I've heard, Bartok died leaving drafts for his concerto, the viola part was near completeion, but his details on the orch was sketchy at best. Then, a friend of his finished it for him and that became the "standard" version of Bartok. However, I don't know if you know of a new version of Bartok viola concerto, a 1995 version edited by P. Bartok and P. Neubauer. That one is fastly becoming popular. Hahah, I'm really no expert on this, I just like Bartok because it's so eerie and radiates such morbid energy in the beginning and then gradually the viola morphs to an understated
sorrow...
Yuri Bashmet is an excellent player, I liked his performance in the double concerto and the walton concerto. I really favor his Bruch Romance performance though.
We actually performed the Bruch G minor once with a soloist from our orchestra! Only the first movement though. In my opinion, Bruch's first movement is fantastic, but the following movements are not as strong. I still like it though. The Marchenbilder(Fairy Tale) is a good one! I really like that one. I kept imagining a galloping horse in the second movement, hahah.
My favorite violist is Nobuko Imai. OMG she is sooo amazing! When I heard her play the Bach cello suites arranged for viola, I DIED. She has such a clear and crisp tonality, also a very clean trill. I suggest you listen to her if you hasn't already and decided for yourself. I also like Bashmet alot, but sometimes he does too much wrist vibrato for my tatse. I like a very wide arm vibrato to bring out the warmth of the viola tone.
Are you considering to be a viola performer as a career (or maybe already is one)? I'm just a classical music-holic, but I still take lessons with a private teacher and I perform with a community orchestra on some weekends as a hobby. My boyfriend though, is planning on being a viola performer. What about you?

oh, you havent lived until you hear the 24 Caprices (I prefer the Itzaak Perlman recording but there are tons out there) and I also really like his Concerto No. 2 "La Campanella".
