hopefully a long time! if you care for them after each use, you will have them for years to come.

So I love your tails, like hardcore, but I was wondering if you've ever used something other than the Alex Plus. I've done the research on it, and I'm pretty susceptible to chemicals. Have you used Silicone at all? I'm curious to know if it would work the same on the neoprene.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

missfit1023 In reply to ComatoseAngel [2013-01-25 23:22:41 +0000 UTC]

i know quite a few people who have used other methods - i'm just too poor to try it lol.
one person i know used "monster magic" latex on neoprene, and some who have made tails with dragonskin silicone.
one friend of mine uses the ALEX silicone. you can research and talk to the makers at mernetwork.com
good luck!

I just want to say that finding your page makes me very happy. Its so awesome to see a mermaid model/ cosplayer that is actually a similar size to myself. I would like to own a tail one day ^_^ ( gotta save up though , I know they are expensive)

just do what makes you happy, despite what limitations you might think your body has - your confidence will outshine it all.

:3 I am trying my best to think more along those lines, though I am still pretty shy and need to build up my confidence. I have been thinking of making a mermaid sona for a while , simply because I have loved the water since I was tiny XD I love staying in the water for 5-8 hours at a time. Well when I get a chance to swim that is hehe.

Thank you!! I just bought some latex yesterday and am just going to start out small and make like maybe a bra. It's funny Snow White was never really my super favorite, but after one Halloween I just knew she was my Cosplay calling. But mermaids will always be my favorite.

Hey! I'm trying to make a tail for my younger cousin, and your tutorial was beyond amazing - you are brilliant but I had a question. >_< How do you get the monofin in just right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

missfit1023 In reply to Razelly [2012-01-17 08:22:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
The monofin I used had to be cut in order to fit it in the fluke perfectly. What I did was I put the monofin in the tail as-is, then traced the edge of the tail's fabric onto the monofin (A Paint-Sharpie works perfectly, they are in every Michael's Crafts store). Then I proceeded to cut the tail with industrial/heavy duty scissors.
The fin is relatively easy to cut, the hard parts are the ridges.
I know some people try to use a table saw, but I would not recommend it if you haven't used one before.
Once the monofin is cut to the correct size (be sure to check before this step), place the monofin inside the fluke, and use either fabric glue, silicone, or latex.
**NOTE ABOUT THE LATEX/SILICONE**
If you use either silicone or latex to glue the monofin inside of the tail, keep in mind that the thicker the amount you use the longer it will take to dry. I wouldn't use latex inside of the tail due to me not knowing it wasn't dry before using it, but I haven't used silicone yet either.
Maybe get a fast-drying silicone for gluing the monofin inside.
Gluing the fin to the fabric is very essential - If you swim/wear the tail, your fin will shift around inside the fluke and the monofin will be extremely noticeable.
Good luck!
