Hi Carrie!!! I saw your post on the ScoliosisSupport group, and I was wondering if you have any advice. I'm getting the scoliosis surgery tomorrow and am really nervous.

I wish I had gotten this earlier! I'm sorry. Well, you've already had the surgery, haven't you? I would have told you not to be worried because the doctors do this kind of surgery all the time. I've never heard of anyone having many complications. Mine went fine. You'll feel really out of it (mostly from drugs) for a while, and you'll have pretty bad pain for several weeks, but after the first month or so, you should be ok. Unfortunately, you'll be restricted for months, and although you may feel perfectly fine after two months or so, listen to your doctor and don't over do it. I did even a year after surgery and I had really bad pain for 2 months. I was afraid I'd have to get surgery again, but I ended up doing physical therapy and eventually I felt fine. Let me know how your surgery went! I'm expecting you'll be in the hospital for a week, and if you have any questions about recovery, feel free to ask me. Hopefully you'll be glad you had the surgery; I'm so glad I did. I had pain everyday before I got mine, but for the past 2 years or so, I haven't had much at all. Maybe a couple time a year my back hurts, and that's normally when I do something stupid. Again, let me know if you have any questions! I wish you the best of luck!

Hi! My surgery went fine, it lasted for 4 1/2 hours. I got out of the hospital on my 5th day post-op and am recovering pretty nicely now!!! My scar has been hurting me a bit, but other than that, everything's fine. The pain isn't that bad, but then again I'm still on the narcotics XD I just have problems with my right hip. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, it really helped me!!!

mistic56 In reply to kika567 [2012-11-09 15:19:19 +0000 UTC]

No problem! What's wrong with your right hip? But that's all of your issues afterwards? Now that I think about it, I had some nerve damage in my right thigh that just made my thigh feel like it was itching or tingling a lot of the time, but that fixed itself with time. Hope you're feeling a lot better now. Was your surgery already about a month ago? Wow, my apologies for responding so late. Are you back at school now?

kika567 In reply to mistic56 [2012-11-09 20:24:13 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure what's wrong, if I sit for too long it hurts a lot. The pain has been spreading to my knee and the doctor said it was probably a bone or muscle bruise but I don't think so. Before the surgery though, I had numbness in my right hip. It might be related to that... XD No, only 3 weeks and 2 days ago. It's fine :3 No, I don't go back to school until December, but we have holidays at the end of December so I won't really be back till January.

mistic56 In reply to kika567 [2012-11-20 07:20:18 +0000 UTC]

I think pain from sitting is normal. I know that for me, sitting was a lot more painful than lying or standing. Wow, that seems like a while that you're out of school. Hopefully you'll feel up to doing stuff by the time your break comes. Has your knee gotten any better? That sounds like a really weird complication from surgery.

kika567 In reply to mistic56 [2012-11-24 14:59:08 +0000 UTC]

Lying down is the best for me, then standing, then sitting. I'm really dreading going back to school because classes are like 45 minutes with 5 minutes in between, so my back is probably going to die. My knee has gotten better, but know it's just weakness in my legs. I don't know why, though.

mistic56 In reply to kika567 [2012-12-17 03:45:29 +0000 UTC]

I know a girl who brought a pillow to school with her after she had the surgery, so there's always that option to hopefully make yourself more comfortable. I still sit at an odd angle in the chairs during my classes sometimes because the backs are so hard. I hope it's not too bad for you. Did you work out or do sports before surgery? Your weakness could just be because you haven't been using them as much as you used too since you're probably lying down most of the time. How are you now? It's been a while since I last responded (sorry about that - finals took over my life).

mistic56 In reply to callista-miralni [2009-10-19 23:29:42 +0000 UTC]

Of course I remember you. Well, assuming I'm correct in assuming you're my first year JBA sweetmate, Elizabeth. If I'm wrong, you can totally hit me...or do some form of torture that can be done over the internet.

But yes, I do have a dA account. How'd you find me, if you don't mind me asking? Emily has one too: ~TransForterran

You've been to a con? Which one? Emily and I are planning this whole shenanigan that deals with me going to college in LA, getting an apartment by my junior year, and then going to the SDCC over summer.

callista-miralni In reply to mistic56 [2009-10-20 01:29:54 +0000 UTC]

Right on target my friend.

Actually, I looked on your facebook profile because it hit me that I haven't talked to you in a long time. And I ended up finding the link. Cool- I didn't know Emily had one too.

I've been to a few. Izumicon down here in Oklahoma, Tokyo in Tulsa, A-kon in Dallas and Comic Con San Diego. Funny you mention SDCC- I'm going this summer too! Is it going to be your first con?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mistic56 In reply to callista-miralni [2009-10-21 01:36:16 +0000 UTC]

Awesome!

I thought that might have been the case. Emily just called me a killjoy. It probably had something to do with the fact I just told her the reason you found her was because I told her that I told you that she had an account. Emily actually just got facebook too. I don't know if you've discovered that yet. People from her internship pressured her into getting one.

That sounds cool. It would be my first con, but we probably won't go this summer. I think we're going to Spain with our school, assuming we have the money, during about the same time as the SDCC. That, and I haven't actually decided on any college yet. Actually, I haven't even decided on which colleges I'm even going to apply to yet. Maybe I'll apply/go to one of the three colleges in LA that I've found.

Speaking of which, you should be in college, shouldn't you? How's that going?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

callista-miralni In reply to mistic56 [2009-10-21 14:41:22 +0000 UTC]

College sucks. Just saying. Or maybe the reason why it sucks for me is because I went to a private college prep school and so far, everything's the exact same... except for the inordinate amounts of free time I have on my hands.

Spain sounds amazing. You're lucky you have that chance to go this summer.

Yeah, picking a college is always an issue. :/ But LA is an awesome place to live and visit. What are you planning on majoring in?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mistic56 In reply to callista-miralni [2009-10-21 20:24:49 +0000 UTC]

Ah, did you go close to home? What are you majoring in? It seems I've had a much more accurate image of college since...ever. A lot of people seem to think it'll be all fun and games. I've never been looking forward to it.

I'm kind of nervous about going though. I always feel like a moron when I try to speak Spanish.

I'm sure it's an awesome place to live, but it's completely different than what I'm used to. I live in the woods...and I don't work well with one way streets. I'm planning on majoring in film and video. I want to go into post production. I'm so done with things that require an immense amount of thinking, such as physics and calculus, but mainly physics.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

callista-miralni In reply to mistic56 [2009-10-21 21:36:37 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha that's awesome. There's so much to do in the film industry that people don't know about- I think it's crazy how actors don't even do half the work that goes into a movie.

Don't like one way streets huh? Yeah... LA is filled with them. I wish you luck with that. And the Spanish thing.

Yeah I ended up staying close to home. I'm majoring in English with a pre-med concentration.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mistic56 In reply to callista-miralni [2009-10-21 22:58:33 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I'd like to stay close to home, but there doesn't seem to be many schools in the Midwest with film and video, especially in Missouri. The closest school that's smart with actually high ACT scores is in Chicago. That's cold...and 6 hours away. I figure I might as well just go to LA if I'm already going that far away.

That sounds cool. I like reading and writing, but honestly, I kind of suck at it. You and Em should have a chat dealing with majoring in English. I think she's thought about doing that. What do you want to do job-wise?

callista-miralni In reply to mistic56 [2009-10-21 23:59:52 +0000 UTC]

I wanted to be a radiologist like my dad. It's funny you mention a talk with Emily; that's what she and I are doing right now.

Yeah Chicago's pretty chilly. Have you thought about Florida State? From what I've heard, they've got a decent film program over there if LA doesn't work out for you.

So, are you still on the same track as you were way back in October career plan wise?

I didn't think about Florida State. I wanted a small school though, and now I'm going to LA.

callista-miralni In reply to mistic56 [2010-06-11 04:52:49 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha don't worry about it. Reality catches up to us like that.

Yeah, I'm pretty much on the same track. LA will be a great place for you to study, since you could probably intern at any one of the available studios there. By the way, congratulations on graduating!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mistic56 In reply to callista-miralni [2010-07-27 12:58:23 +0000 UTC]

So have you done anything exciting this year?

Oh, thanks! I had already forgotten about graduation. Seems like a long time ago. Where is this summer going? I only have exactly one month until I have to leave for college. But yeah, there's a whole wall at the film of school and television at my college that has pamphlets and fliers of available internships. It helps that most internships of that type are in the same city.

The magnifying glass one is really easy. We burned the picnic table. The other one is really obnoxiously tiring, and requires some rope, a bent stick, a knife, two pieces of hard wood, and a stick. We'll do it sometime.

Also, I can teach you how to sex a lizard!

Oh, well I was glancing at my faves (the first couple most recently faved pages) and there was like only 1. I believe both of those hat pictures were including Wammy's Justice Club. You've heard of that, haven't you? Please say you have. Anyways, I would like to label the chance of 2 of the 4 pictures that pop up featured fedora-donning sleuths as random and pure chance. I don't remember if the hat that I'm wearing in my ID is a fedora or just a top hat. It was so long ago. Perhaps Emily remembers. But, I will still say that I do enjoy those things. They make me feel extra sleuthy.
