Ben Taylor ( Mometo )

My vision is that life is colourful, deeply rich, and endlessly interesting if you have the curiosity and courage to look from unusual angles, and it is to be lived and loved as fully as you can.

After twenty years of working as both a traditional modelmaker and then as a CGI artist and company director, and despite being at the top of my game, I realised that something important was missing in my whirligig London lifestyle. I quit, and the adventurous spirit that had always been part of me went on an extraordinary journey of self-discovery which reignited my personal creative vision. On the way, I've found Nature to be my greatest teacher, and have tried to deepen my connection to her by undergoing a number of initiations into indigenous traditions, studying meditation and Taoist arts, and I feel this comes across through the incorporation of different and often natural elements, such as feathers, bones, seeds and wood, into sculptural paintings and works representing the preciousness and sacredness of each moment. Mometo is the name given to me in the African shamanic tradition of Bwiti. I create artwork in the spirit of Mometo, and so sign my work under this name also. I continue to return to Gabon, learning the music and culture of this tradition.

I am blessed to live in a magical Dartmoor forest, spending time walking in the woods every day. But despite my best efforts to live a quiet life, I can still be found dancing or DJ-ing at parties and festivals or doing strange spiritual ceremonies, usually in a jungle somewhere far away.
