Hello, uh, not so random deviant? Thanks for the note.
The fact you know of Ubuntu is kind of cool (or uncool, depending how one looks at it) alone. That you hurray it is awesome! Do you/have you used it?

Hey, knowing Linux is a cool thing!
Yep, I had Hardy for awhile earlier this year, but I was having little annoying problems (like my iPod crashed and wouldn't sync with Ubuntu media players, and my Photoshop would disregard tablet pressure sensitivity within a few hours after reboot) so I reinstalled XP. Once I get a more capable computer in the next six months or so, I plan to have Intrepid as my main OS again, since I think it's mainly disk errors that was giving Ubuntu problems (my hard drive is sort of... shot, lmao).

Aww, that's a shame you were having problems. I have my own share (mainly a minor nuisance with wireless but it's easy to fix). I bought my laptop because it worked well with Ubuntu.
About your iPod, I used mine all the time with Amarok and never had a problem. I've used Hardy and more recently Intrepid with no issues. Of course it wasn't automatic like iTunes would be but I could easily access and add/remove audio from the iPod. Have you tried asking somebody in the Ubuntu community?
PS. I'd offer to help but I'm new to Linux myself and would likely break stuffs.

Yeah. I can usually figure stuff out on my own well enough, but no amount of restoring via Amarok, gtkpod, or anything would get my iPod working again, so I figured I might as well get it back on iTunes where it belongs. It's nice having Windows again, but I do miss being an Ubuntu dork. :)
Well, like I said my hard disk is slowly dying (every month or so I have to run a chkdsk /f or even /r just to keep it from giving me odd problems), and my iPod had issues to begin with (I believe it was part of some production line that was openly declared to be flawed), so yeah. No worries, I'll be upgrading this old laptop to a nice big desktop with the best specs my money can buy me (like a quad-core processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, BluRay drive... *drool*).
No problem! When did you start using Ubuntu?

That's very unusual, I haven't heard of any serious problems with iPods and Ubuntu the like of which you are describing. Oh well, hopefully your new laptop can take on Ubuntu and match up the iPod with no problems. I'm certain you know already but be careful all your new hardware is compatible with Linux.
I started using Ubuntu back with Dapper Drake a few years ago. That was my introduction to Linux but it was short-lived. The computer wasn't mine and installing a whole new OS over Windows would have been frowned on. It did make an impact on me and I knew once I bought my own computer Ubuntu would be on it. When I got this laptop over the past summer I used Windows long enough to get the .iso, make a Live CD and then installed Hardy. Ubuntu just has so much goodness that I didn't go back to Windows at all so now it's the only OS I have on here.
(Well to be perfectly honest, the other day I tried out Linux Mint and decided I loved it enough to put it on the [link] It's an Ubuntu derivative though so that doesn't count, right?)
PS. Sorry for the length, I'm being kind of wordy.

(Nah, no worries. Being wordy isn't a bad thing!)
Yeah, most of the time they seem to work all right. But I think that, what with my iPod being defective in the first place and my hard drive now kind of dying, that's probably the reason - nothing to do with Ubuntu itself. And yeah, thanks for the reminder - I'll definitely have to check out the specs of my next computer (though from what I know, Linux tends to be pretty on top of stuff when it comes to hardware compatibility)!
Wow, Dapper - that was released about two years ago, wasn't it? I personally really like Ubuntu (it challenges my brain more often than Windows because of the necessary use of the terminal every once and awhile) but I have to admit it's nice to be able to plug-n-go with Windows... The lazy side of me appreciates the switch back to Windows, lmao. But I would love to have Ubuntu as my primary OS again.
Linux Mint eh? I actually saw that one day, and as a minimalist that really really appealed to me. Have you found any major differences between it and Ubuntu Hardy?

Haha, I spoke sooner than I should have! The other day I had a minor issue with my iPod where it transferred the files but couldn't play them for whatever reason. I fixed it but lacking in my new music made me sad that trip out.
Dapper was released something like two years ago. It was a great OS, very refreshing especially compared to Windows 2000 (the copy of Windows on the computer). I loved the open source concept and Dapper really got me into looking for open source alternatives. After having to remove Dapper I looked for open source software on Windows and used them. It helped to tide me over until I got this computer.
There isn't a huge difference between Linux Mint and Hardy. The current Linux Mint release is 6 Felicia which is based off of Hardy. You will notice a lot of Hardy on the system if you used it. Mint's GUI is a bit nicer by default, a bit smoother and pretty looking to me. Mint also comes with GNOME Do and once I started using it I won't want to do without it. Mint also includes some Mint specific features like MintInstall (that works like the add/remove menu in Ubuntu but with added features like screenshots, reviews, hardware compatibilities, etc.). There's a nanny program that will restrict certain sites if you're into that (makes Mint friendlier to parents I guess?), an easy backup option, it's own update system that shows how much software is tested under Mint, and some other features I probably don't know of yet. One of the coolest things Mint includes is a MintUpload feature that allows you to upload files to a server so that you can share the link with friends and allow them all to download. Obviously you could use it yourself to share between computers and such. It's only temporary (3 days or so) but that should allow ample time for people to get the files you upload. One last thing I am finding Mint does well: play music. Ubuntu always seemed somewhat muted on this computer, Mint seems to play audio a bit better.
But I've gone on long enough. You encouraged me that being wordy isn't bad though!

Oh, thanks butterfrog. I'm not sure what I can post up just yet since I lack artistic talent. Maybe some maps since I'm reading tutorials on how to make them with the GIMP.
