Bluntly, I find the comment you left on my piece insulting.

I am well read and well educated and you assume that simply because I know words, places and a wide variety of different things and can use them all in a correct sentence structure, I must have used a thesaurus.

You may have left it in good will: but it does not come across in such a way. It comes across as pompous and petty to me; and while I may be alone in this, I may not be.

Perhaps next time you should enquire into the piece, or review your comments for potential misread negativity, so as not to come across so offensively, and think more on how to more accurately use critiquing skills instead of pinning a person's work down to something that has merely been elaborated.

mspadfoot2 In reply to iPawed [2010-06-21 14:34:25 +0000 UTC]

I apologize if it came out offensively, I didn't mean it to be. Maybe I should have rephrased. How about this? Normally, pieces with words that are rare enough that most, but not all, people would only know them from a thesaurus, turn me off. I know of no one who uses these words in a regular sentence except one person, and he just uses them to sound pompous. I'm not saying that's what you are. That's simply the connotation I have of these words. I'm sorry if it was offensive.

iPawed In reply to mspadfoot2 [2010-06-22 01:06:47 +0000 UTC]

"These words" - such as what? Doric vs Corinthian? They're styles of columns, and very different ones: to say, simple columns or fancy columns is not only wrong, but sounds erroneous to me, as I've studied Ancient Greece and Italy for many years now and have, in fact, travelled extensively through both countries.

To know Vivaldi and Bach and know the differences between them: is that pompous to you? If so, I do terribly apologise for the fact I was raised on Classical music and grew up alongside incredibly famous composers...

To dream up a few names for nail enamels, or to know the names of two famous designers: that's something I'd get from a thesaurus?

To know of Venice, of Cannes, of Germany - that is simply to be aware of cultures outside my own; something that I believe is a benefit, not an act of vanity or an attempt at superiority.

Very, very few words have exactly similar meanings to another; hence why we have so many. Perhaps the person you know simply understands the subtle differences between these words, as I do: and knows that using a more simple word in place of another would in fact give another meaning entirely to what he's trying to say.

It's a matter of being educated, in my opinion.

mspadfoot2 In reply to iPawed [2010-06-22 02:42:47 +0000 UTC]

Well, thank you very much for calling me uneducated. I may not have the money or the background to be versed in designers or Classical music. I may not have the income required to travel, but I do still take extreme offense at being called uneducated. I may not know every classical musician, but by the age of fifteen, I'd read most of the classical authors. I can hold a debate with anyone about anything and I am more educated than you seem to assume. That comment, while maybe you as a person aren't, was pompous, as is the snippy, immature apology you give in your second paragraph. I'm sorry I didn't grow up with as many opportunities as you or with parents who are well-educated. I'm not old enough to have given myself that chance yet.

And I'll thank you to not make assumptions about my friends. I go to school with him and I'm the one who endures his constant contempt for anyone who doesn't have enough money to be fancy as he is. And the way he constantly throws out words that he actually doesn't really understand (I know because I've heard him misuse them) just to sound falsely intelligent. This is not what you, or anyone else who uses intelligent words does. This is just the first association I have.

And, by the way, excuse me for still being in high school and not knowing the difference between two different styles of columns. I rather busy myself reading classic authors than studying architecture. That was not a jab, I swear. It's just not where my interests lie. Excuse me.

iPawed In reply to mspadfoot2 [2010-06-22 06:00:17 +0000 UTC]

It's not about money: you are continuing to assume things... I simply read, just as you say you do. I adore reading, and from that I have learnt most of what I know - education does not necessarily require money to acquire.

My apology was sarcastic: that much is true, I shan't deny that; but alright, I was not aware of your age. Now that I am, I shall apologise genuinely for being quite so irritable at you - you do come across as being older, and if you had been an older person, I'd have expected you to know better.

Though, if you do comment on something that is on a subject that you do not know, I will again advise you: be more aware of how you set your words out.

mspadfoot2 In reply to iPawed [2010-06-22 16:30:34 +0000 UTC]

I was irritable in my second comment as well, so there is blame to share. I apologize again. I really mean it. My comment on your piece was rude.

From COPhoebeP3 -

This is her sister. And fyi, my sister is one of the most educated people I know. Talking about her being uneducated is absolutely ludicrous. The fact that our family doesn't have as many opportunities has absolutely no relevance to her education.

Some people have different interests and that means that they don't study things that aren't in that realm of interest. Calling somebody uneducated just because they don't know as much about something [such as the architecture of Ancient Greece and Italy] as someone else does not make them uneducated.

Before you run your mouth and call people uneducated, perhaps you should look into this thing called common sense [that you obviously have heard nothing about] and think about how some people don't have as many chances to go to Europe and extensively study the architecture in Greece and Italy, and that others would rather put their energy into something that they are more interested in.

Good day.
