Checked out your website. Looks great. Say, how long have you been selling your artwork? Thinking about devoting much more time to that and was wondering if you had any tiparoonys

Hi Nathan! Thanks for the compliment and for visiting my website!!
I've been selling my art for about 2 years now, and had my website up for about 1 1/2 years. I have received some business from my website, but mostly I use it as a type of portfolio for prospective clients to view my artwork, and see info about me. I also use it to keep clients informed about the progress of their commissions.
As for tips, well I'm not sure if you meant tips for a website or tips as an artist. Anyway, be sure to always paint what inspires YOU no matter what anyone else says!! Otherwise, you're artwork will never be great and you'll never grow as an artist. The level of your inspiration or attachment to a painting always shows through in the end.
Do commissions, if that is what you really want to do, or have to do to make some money, but know that it's very demanding and it takes you on an emotional roller coaster. You open yourself up to a lot of criticism and potential problems and heartaches with commissions, but it can also be quite rewarding. Just develop a thick skin and learn to let criticisms roll off your shoulder.
If you do decide to do commissions, make sure you also do something just for you on the side. Otherwise, you'll burn yourself out. Be honest with yourself about your abilities, level of organization, and the amount of time it takes to complete a piece; and always be honest with your client! Be sure to create a contract for commissions. Both you and your client sign them. It holds BOTH of you accountable, which is a good thing, but you'd better uphold your end of the agreement. The good thing about commissions is that you don't have to accept one if you don't want to, just don't load yourself down too much at one time and be sure to create a waiting list with a timeline of when you think each one will be completed. (examples and a thread on contracts can be found at Scribbletalk , a forum for pencil artists).
Most importantly, have FUN!! Paint what interests you, and plan on having a part time job to pay your bills with. In order to be a full time artist you have to have a following and already have frequent, steady sales. It takes time to reach that point; don't rush it. You grow as an artist and in your ability as time goes on. Give yourself that time or you may find yourself very stressed out!!
I hope these tips helped you and are the kind of tips you were looking for. BTW, if you do sell your art and you live in the U.S., you can either call it a "hobby" up to a certain income level or a business - for tax purposes. If you want it to be a business, apply for a tax number with your state and with the federal government, but know that you will get paperwork that has to be filled out on a regular basis for the IRS, and you CAN'T not do it. Whatever you do, DO NOT get in trouble with the IRS!!
Let me know if you have any other questions. I'd be happy to try to answer them for you! Have a great day Nathan!!

Hello there. You have inspired me to do a horse drawing in the future. Thank you. It is great to talk to a Wyoming native. I am from Montana and I miss that area of the country.
