# About me

Hello, my name is Nick and I am an amateur artist.
I enjoy coding and speed solving Rubik's cubes.

I suppose that's it for now.

i don't know you but i saw your icon and now i'm wondering:
1. do you speed-solve cubes ?
2. are you a puzzle enthusiast ?

or am i getting way too excited about a person who just happens to have a 4x4x4 cube as their icon ? (in which case i'm just an idiot with an obscure hobby, please forgive meee)

ANYWAY happy belated birthday and also hi !

By the way, the icon is really of a 5x5, which is kind of my dream haha

Hahaha no worries! Yes, I attempt to speed-solve cubes, but I've never really gotten past 35 seconds with a 3x3. I like to say that I can speed-solve, but it's not really speed compared with other people. D: I only use a 3x3 because I HATE PARITY!!! *rage* I do own a 4x4 and can solve it (in 7 minutes if there's no parity lol) but I have never gotten my hands on a 5x5. Some friends /were/ gonna split the price to get me one for my birthday, but they decided against it... And I have a 2x2 but I just play around with it until it's solved haha

I also have a Pyraminx and a Platypus and I solve those without algorithms (it just takes a while) but that's really it. I'm kind of against Rubik's Revolutions and such because they aren't real puzzles, ya know? OH! AND I LOVE JIGSAW PUZZLES. I really only do 1000-piece puzzles exclusively, but yeah...

It's nice to meet other Rubik's cubers!

catlinq In reply to nickknax [2012-04-09 20:56:46 +0000 UTC]

eeehhh it's still speedsolving ! you're only a beginner if you're over a minute ! my PB is currently around 38 seconds, but it's been falling rapidly lately so who knows ? (and i'll be learning full PLL soon which may help. uh, a lot. god i'm lazy..)

what method/cube do you generally use ?
i'm currently lucky enough to be working with a dayan guhong which is basically the best cube i've come across yet, save for the zhan chi maybe ? maybe. i use (intermediate) fridrich method at the moment, working up to advanced *-*

LOL PARITY. rage inducing. i only own 3x3s, a rubik's globe and a pyraminx so far, but i've played with many, many puzzles and yeah..

2x2 you can solve using 3x3 methods, actually. that's how i do it, anyway. just think of it as a 3x3 but with the edge pieces missing. it solves slowly that way (as opposed to using PBL and stuff), but yeah it's a lot of fun to mess with i think. i should get one soon, but i kind of really want a shapeshifting puzzle or 4x4 cube.. ;;

pyraminx really does take a while without algs, haha.. it's just those last three pieces. eventually i got fed up of long solve times and just caved and looked up the algorithms for it.

i don't really do 2D jigsaws, but 3D ones are great *-*

and yeah, it really is ! sorry if i'm getting a bit carried away, but it's not often i find someone to talk puzzles with !

Hahaha no problem... Same here!

Wow, I'm not quite as serious with speed cubing lol I use a Rubik's cube that I got from Target then put petroleum jelly in. XD Believe it or not, I'm actually using the method in the manual that comes with the cube, but I've gotten SO familiar with it and can do the algorithms extremely quickly. I was too lazy to learn a new method and just became beast at this one, although it's got limited potential and I don't believe I can get any faster than where I am now.

Really? With the pyraminx I worked out a method to solve it within 3 minutes because I didn't want to bother memorizing more algorithms haha

catlinq In reply to nickknax [2012-04-10 11:26:14 +0000 UTC]

regular cubes can be pretty good once you mess with them a bit. i think my mum managed some really fast times on her modded rubik's cube *-*

i the method that comes in the manual is usually fridrich method ! like starting with the cross, finishing the first layer, doing the middle edges then OLL and PLL. it seems to be like the default method that people use (it's because it's a nice method yes)

LOL yeah i got lazy as well. i kinda stuck at about a minute with my old unmodded cube and beginner method.. the new cube improved it a little, but lately i've been working on learning new stuff and that's really helped. speeding cross and first two layers up does wonders for your times !

do you do F2L/first two layers together already ? that's good fun because it's all intuition (no memorising needed !), and a good starting point if you're wanting to eventually build up to an advanced method

before i learned algorithms and i got to that stage with the three pieces left, i'd just pick a side to solve it from and keep doing that. if i saw an easy way to solve midway through, i'd do that instead. it was still hella slow, though ;u;

what kind of method do you use for it ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nickknax In reply to catlinq [2012-04-12 00:11:49 +0000 UTC]

Then, yes, I use the Fridrich method. XD I think it's sometimes called the Dan Brown method, after the Youtuber that taught millions of people to solve it (but basically did a better job of explaining the manual's method). Although it may be slower, I don't want to take the trouble of learning more algorithms for another method and I'd rather continue to enhance my ability with this one (although I seem to have reached my limit).

No, I don't do the first two layers together. How does it work? (:

I don't really know how to explain at all what I do with the Pyraminx, sorry! It's really weird, but it works for me! haha

catlinq In reply to nickknax [2012-04-12 08:36:33 +0000 UTC]

i've never seen his videos, i might look ! maybe it's different *-*

the best way i can explain it is that at the point where the cross is on the bottom and you're putting in the bottom corners, you also solve those corners relative to the middle edge piece and insert them as a 2x1x1 block. it's much easier to show someone the idea than tell them, but the general gist is that you're solving two pieces at once and the first two layers become complete at the same time.

it should speed you up and there are no algorithms involved *-*

if you have a good idea of how the first layer algorithms work, it shouldn't be too hard to then build on that and start using F2L

here's a video to help explain better what F2L does [link] it has some instructions, but you'll probably get the hang of it yourself after seeing some examples !

I think I know what you mean... man, why haven't I heard of this before? This sounds great! Thank you so much! I'll check out the video! Maybe I'll finally be able to get past the 30 sec mark (probably just 29, but I'd be happy lol) This method sounds really fun and intuitive too!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

catlinq In reply to nickknax [2012-04-13 11:15:50 +0000 UTC]

nooo believe me it'll speed you up a lot once you get to grips with it ! you'll slow down to start with, but it'll probably take a fair bit off your time !

and yeah, that's why i like it as well *-* b
learning a lot of algorithms tends to get boring unless i'm in the mood for it, so intuitive methods are always nice.

another fun thing to do is to solve the cube into a certain pattern. i like to solve mine into a checkerboard pattern and things like that ! and i like to set myself challenges. like seeing if i can solve it before my bread is finished toasting. silly things like that xD

nickknax In reply to catlinq [2012-04-15 20:23:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh I love solving cubes into patterns too! And then solve it without actually messing it all up lol Sometimes I'll have my cube next to me while I'm watching TV and just solve it a couple times during commercials to keep me entertained.

Hopefully I'll get comfortable with that intuitive method soon! I'll get used to it once I get the chance (maybe during this standardized testing period where I don't have homework lol). Thanks for sharing with me!
