you are trying to go for realism in your work and it isn't working. Think about lighting, color correction, perspective, etc. I think your best one is jami waking, but the lighting/shadow on the hand isn't right. The color is pretty close though.

most of the time i put something on here ive put it together, thought it looks amusing, and maybe tried a little to make it look like it fits a bit better, realism is all well and good, as long as it dosen't take away from something, and more often than not when ive done it i've lost the "fake" aspect that helps get the point across.

Realism doesn't take anything away from the image, just makes it that much better. Obviously somebody holding a lightsaber is fake, but i am sure you would like it to look as if he is actually holding a lightsaber.......hence realism. If you have a glowing sword/fire/electricity............it radiates light, thus objects around it will reflect that light and shadows are created.
