I speak only Bulgarian and English. We had learned Russian for one year at school, as a second foreign language, but nothing too serious. Actually, the language is very hard for me with his all 9 cases and complicated grammar.
Yes, the two languages are very similar, because of our similarly ancestors. It's because the Cyrillic was created by the Cyril and Methodius brothers to help the Roman empire deals with the Slavic people. Later, by the students of Cyril and Methodius, the alphabet was brought to other lands with Slavic peoples, and consequently to different nations like Russians, Serbs and other, which are Slavics, and also to non-Slavic nations as Vlachs and Moldavians.
Actually, we Bulgarians would be still speaking the ancient Bulgarian if our ruler, Boris I, hadn't Christianize Bulgaria and pronounced the Slavic as a national language, with which he destined the ancient Bulgarian to disappear and become a death language.
