It's about people facing their inner demons to obtain a 'personal and alter ego of their true feelings. They then go into another world to fight monsters and change people's hearts and desires. It sounds pretty lame and cheesy, but the series pulls it off with a dark mood.

I highly recommend them, but you should choose to play based off of the mood. 3 is dark and depressing, with a mellow vibe. 4 is cheerful, and about making real bonds and helping people through hardships. 5 is about anger, and vigilante justice, about proving your worth to society. Each game starts from scratch, so you can play them in any order you want. 5 just came out, and is even a nominee for game of the year.
