Thanks for the compliment. John does like my photography, I think...maybe...at least I hope so.

Just out of curoisty, what camera do you use?

enochLIEW In reply to oaphoto [2006-06-23 07:26:14 +0000 UTC]
My dad bought it years ago, so it isn't nearly as good as any other out in the market now.
You can find it here - [link] It's a prosumer camera. Not sure whether you know what that is, because I myself found out only last week.
A prosumer camera is a professional/consumer camera. Meaning it is not as good as a SLR camera where differerent lenses can be attached but it is better than a normal compact camera.
What I really want now is a Canon 350d - [link] If only I had the money, pfft.

Yeah I use a prosumer Panasonic FZ30. ([link] )
I am really starting to look at getting a Nikon D70s ([link] ).
Money, yes. Now that is a problem....

Your camera has 8.0 million effective pixels!!!
Erm...am I looking at the right camera? Because why would you settle for a Nikon D70s which has 6.1 million effective pixels. Besides the fact that it is a digital SLR instead of a prosumer camera, I do not see why you are eyeing it because 8 million effective pixels kick ass.
I have roughly worked out how many hours I have to work. 100 hours to get my dream camera...tsk tsk.

The D70s has less effective pixels, but even thought the Panasonic has a whopping 8.0m effective pixels there are issues with noise at higher ISOs, also the CMOS sensor in the D70s is higer quality than that of the FZ30, resulting in a much clearer/sharper image than that of the Panasonic.
Generally, the Nikon D70s has higher overall quality, and the added fact that it is an SLR.

D70 has a CCD, not a CMOS. The only Nikon camera to use a CMOS is the D2x. You're forgetting that it also has a larger sensor, superior high-iso noise, better AF and metering and what not.

I am speaking with no experience with a SLR here, but don't all cameras have noise at higher ISO settings? I really do have to learn more about the equipment people use for photography. I know nothing about the sensors, so I will have to take your word for it.
I would be more than happy if I had your current camera. I think mine only has 3.1 million effective pixels. Wow, never realized how old my camera was until I said that.

ldo In reply to enochLIEW [2006-06-25 08:06:16 +0000 UTC]
Yes, all cameras will have higher noise at high ISO settings, but some not as much as others. The larger sensor in dSLR's is the main reason why they have lower noise than P&S cameras. Don't get caught up with pixels, they don't mean squat.

Ido
So what type of sensors are the best? And what camera do you recommend? And what camera do you have? Would you recommend a canon 350d?
Sorry for bombarding you with questions.

ldo In reply to enochLIEW [2006-06-25 11:33:53 +0000 UTC]
Both have their +'s & -'s. CMOS requires alot less power. Canon uses only CMOS sensors in all their latest cameras ( The original 1d used a CCD though ). 350D's are a great camera for beginners, but I'd definately handle one before buying. They're a small camera and made out of plastic, which is one of the major things that made me buy the 20D. If you're into shooting sports everynow and then... I'd probably save and get the 20D as well for the better AF. The 20D also has a better viewfinder. As for the Nikon side of things... if you really want something in the price range of the 350D, then I would probably take the D70s over the 350D.

Ooo...thanks for the input. I will have to do more research for myself. But all the articles are filled with so many jargons, it is difficult to understand without the help of someone more experienced.

That's one of the main selling factors for me is that the D70s is able to shoot at a continuous 3fps for over 100 shots. This is great as I find myself shooting a lot at motor events, like the Clipsal500 and various things at Mallala.

I'd be careful of the "specs" advertised by the manufacturers!!
I have the D70s, and if you're serious about your photography, then you'll probably shoot in RAW format (NEF in Nikonspeak).
The memory buffer is the limiting factor!
minimum shutter speed of 1/250, Image Quality/format, also speed rating of the CF card too, as at some stage the buffer has to write to the card!!
At Image Quality RAW or RAW+basic (ie. 1 RAW and 1 jpg image stored the buffer only holds 4 images!!!
You can use jpg, and lower the IQ to Small and store 49 images to buffer.
I dunno about how the Canons handle these tasks???
cheers

Will you ever need that 100 shot burst though? I find it unlikely. 20D has 5fps for around 30 shots
