Your work is amazing... lighting and composition choices is fantastic, and so nice to see some love given to more obscure sci-fi properties as well as the big ones

Thank you, that's very kind! I pretty much like everything and anything science-fiction, with an obvious, stronger affinity to Star Trek.

Oh man I love your work, I am a huge ST:TNG nerd and I love all of the others as well. Using several of your pieces as wallpapers now. Do you use 3DSM or Daz or Maya? What are your thoughts on the upcoming CBS ST series?

Thank you very much. I'm pretty much in the same boat there; all started with TNG for me, nearly 30 years ago...
As far as software is concerned, neither of those actually. I have been using Lightwave ever since I started getting more serious with this kind of art work, and after I did, I found out that is actually what they used for the initial CG shots in Star Trek and a lot of other sci-fi movies/shows (Battlestar Galactica for instance). I have played with other 3D packages (trueSpace, Bryce, Vue, DAZ Studio, Poser, Blender, Wings3D), but Lightwave is the one that makes the most sense to me, and its render engine really is something else! I've not found the need for an external render engine/plug-in at all so far. It lives up to its name for sure. In more recent versions it also has an OpenGL based preview mode that gives me a very close idea what the lighting and textures in the final render will look like. That helps a lot with scene setups! I usually put a little bit of the overall process in the descriptions of my submissions as well.
A little background story on Lightwave; the ST:VOY intro was rendered with it, and if you pay close attention, towards the end, when the ship swoops by just before it goes to warp, you can see a small texture error (in form of a square) at the underside of the engineering hull. It was such an undertaking to render this back in the day (mid 1990s), that they never fixed it. Unless you know it's there you won't notice; I even overlook it, if I don't think about it.
As for the upcoming series; not much is known, I am pleased they got Brian Fuller on board since he did some stories for STS9 (undoubtedly the best character developing show after TNG to date), and Hannibal. I'm glad they're planning on a new ship and crew, but I am hoping, with all my heart, that it will be set in the prime universe, and not the JJ 'verse. The latter would need to be really convincing for me, or I'll pass. I appreciate the JJ films on a technical level for sure, but to me they're merely an attempt at turning Star Trek into Star Wars to make it more accessible to the mainstream audience, without the need to grasp the deeper meaning Gene Roddenberry placed so much emphasis on when he created the show. I can watch the movies, but I don't consider them true Trek. In that instance I'm somewhat of purist I guess...

Regarding the new series, I also hope its in the regular timeline. I respect JJ for doing the alternate timeline thing, rather than just saying none of the original stuff ever happened. I feel he deliberately created a separate universe so it wouldn't conflict with the series too much. I think it's a good bet that the new show will be in the original universe, as CBS doesn't own the rights to the film anyway, that's Paramount. I'd like to see them jump ahead another 200-300 years similar to ST to STTNG. Maybe with the Enterprise G or H. We've had too much of series set in the 24th century, and too many Star Treks not featuring an actual Enterprise ship. They've gone back in time, they've done a non-ship based show, and a non-enterprise based show. In my opinion the only place to go from here is Enterprise, and a couple centuries into the future.

Well, perhaps. I'm not sure. Going too far in the future could also move away too much. Ideally I don't want this to turn into a "time exploration" show, because ultimately that is where it would lead. And to go "Enterprise", well, that might be a choice, but then there are so many other ships we haven't seen, ships that were mentioned so many times. I don't know. As long as they keep it closer to what Star Trek is about, exploration, scientific discovery, and in the prime universe, I'm game. Shame they can't turn Titan into a TV show. Those novels had some excellent stories. With visual effects there is nothing that can't be explored. I mean, there is always room for a little action, but I'm tired of the Borg, I'm tired of endless wars (even though, to their credit, DS9 did a great job to show all sides of a war, from heroism, to sadness, to despair, to loss, to madness; kudos for sure), still; enough is enough. Most of my favorite episodes in any of the shows are about scientific exploration; that is what sets Star Trek apart from most other science-fiction. But I have long given up on expectations. Usually nothing ever happens how I expect it, so... I will sit in my corner and wait for the utterly unexpected to bear down on me.

I love the exploration aspect too, but what I enjoyed more was the character development of TNG, and the sometimes bizarre look into the human mind, sanity, and existence in general. Think Phantasms, Sub Rosa, Schisms, Night Terrors, The Mind's Eye etc. Even showing Picard dealing with the aftermath of the Borg assimilation, like his breakdown and confiding in his brother about the experience on the episode "Family", with the line from Louis Picard "So... my brother is a human being after all." All of these things really helped to illustrate the humanity of the characters, and allowed viewers to connect and relate to them in very real ways. Other Treks had a few of these moments, many of them very powerful, but none with the abundance and consistency of TNG. Ultimately, that aspect is something I hope they can recapture in the new series no matter what time/ship it is.
