I'm good, how are you? I'm a bit bored, so I'm just randomly greeting people. I figure, if someone's having a bad day, a warm greeting might cheer then up.

Well, I joined up because I like to look at other peoples artwork. I draw, but don't bother uploading anything. I mostly just lurk around here.

Yeah, might upload something someday, if I ever think of it, that is.
Me, I'm terrible at writing poetry, awful at it. I'll check out some of your stuff.

No...I haven't read it. Actually, while I like the quote, I hated the book itself; the premise was too far-fetched for me to get into. I'm usually good at suspending my disbelief for fantasy and sci fi, but that book is thoroughly planted on my exceptions list. I tried valiantly to read through it and gave up...crude humor just isn't my thing. I didn't like the movie either.

i actually thoroughly enjoyed it, however most people do agree the movie is shit compared to the book.
to each their own, i suppose.
what ARE your favorite books to read? fiction or otherwise?
not that you are a big reader, i mean im not. just curious...

I am a big reader with a preference for science fiction and fantasy...the darker the better. Anne Bishop's Black Jewels universe is a favorite of mine. Joanne Bertin is up there as well, as is Maria V. Snyder and Kat Richardson. It's actually gotten rather hard to find good fantasy these days...beyond the mainstream stuff, the selection is very limited. The popular fantasy authors tend not to interest me much...I prefer the things I read to not completely embrace the rampant cliches that have taken over the writing world.
I also read military fiction...Tom Clancy makes my top ten favorite authors. Dale Brown is also decent. Graphic novels (the real Oriental ones, not the cheap American superhero comics) are also up there. Books about crystals interest me, as well as books about psychology and crime. Give me a good psychological thriller or an adrenaline rush of an action story any day.

yeah i do like Tom Clancy...Tolkien DID make some damn good books, but hes mainstream, and i agree that most fantasy is derivative shit.
i love stories with just a story out of the ordinary. Fight Club immediately springs to mind, and the movie was actually REALLY good, if different.
as for sci-fi, i LOVE William Gibson. Neuromancer is one of my fav books of ALL TIME.
ive also been getting into a lot of books dealing with philosophy, psychology, metaphysics and the occult...

Tolkien is another of the authors on my exception lists. He gets so bogged down in details that the story gets lost. The balance between too much and too little detail is a fine line to walk...a difficult feat.
I've neither read nor seen Fight Club. Nor have I read any of Gibson's work. Fantasy and sci fi are my favored genres, but I'm picky as hell about what I'll read within them. I read the major authors like J. K. Rowling and such, but I personally thought that the Harry Potter septet could have been a lot more impressive. Throughout the series, her writing seemed less than confident. And with my propensity for darker fiction, I would have preferred that she show us more instead of keeping it contained for the kiddies. She dwelled on things that didn't have much impact, and glanced over some things that should have been given priority...or so I thought. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
The thing people forget about philosophy and psych is that it's all a matter of opinion; everyone's view is inevitably going to be different. I don't believe in a universal standard of truth. Read it, appreciate the great voices...then make up your own mind. If you're trying to find the path that's right for you, there's no guarantee that you'll find it in anything established. Just remember that it's all in the perspective, and you're fine.
May I ask what branches of metaphysics and the occult you're exploring, and your reasons for doing so? If you're unwilling, it's fine...I understand if it's too personal. I can assure you, however, that I will most likely understand if you choose to talk about it. If you wish to, might I suggest using the note system rather than this...public form?
