i am trying different papers, tried velours an meteints. now i bought some sandpaper(dont know the real name but it feels like sand fixed to paper.will look on google for the paper yuo use)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Studio-in-Blue In reply to pat71art [2013-06-13 12:09:34 +0000 UTC]

I've heard other people call it sandpaper, too. It must require a lot of pastel…albeit a tooth that pronounced probably takes a lot of layering, too.

Working on pastelmat paper now, love it, no dust, just like normal drawing with graphite pencil.

Oooh…I'm going to see if my local shop carries it. That's one of the reasons I took up painting: if there's going to be mess, there should be lots of it.

pat71art In reply to Studio-in-Blue [2013-06-14 08:40:45 +0000 UTC]

They must have Some, on the wetcanvas forum a lot of artist use it and They live in America. You dont even need to use fixative. I can put about minimal 8 layers on it. The only different is That i have to fill the underpainting verry good, the first layer take a lot of pastel. I use verry cheap pastel for That. I am now working on a painting of my Mother in pastel and for the underpainting i used a layer of Black ink thinnedwith water.works good. Its the Same picture of my Mother That i used for the Black and white version.

The economy has hit our neck of the woods pretty hard. Our art store is a lot less populated with inventory, but the owner is always glad to special order something if you want to buy a portion (chances are high another artist will want to try it soon after watching it being used by their peers). Good to know the technique. But isn't cheaper pastel less lightfast?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pat71art In reply to Studio-in-Blue [2013-06-16 21:46:51 +0000 UTC]

I can be less lightfast. I am now trying to make an underpainting with ink on pastelmat. I want to know if That infacts the Total layers.

Studio-in-Blue In reply to pat71art [2013-06-19 14:17:16 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like a cool idea. I don't see why not…don't people work with tinted papers for the same reason?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pat71art In reply to Studio-in-Blue [2013-06-19 15:24:05 +0000 UTC]

I work also with tinted paper. Have big problem now. ThePastelmat paper with i am working on right now on the portrait of my Mother is not good. Gets Black spots in the drawing now. Cold be That the paper is damaged in the store weer i bought it They say on wetcanvas. Dont know if i continue or start over again.

Studio-in-Blue In reply to pat71art [2013-06-21 22:57:22 +0000 UTC]

Interesting and such a shame. I know some papers can have poorly cured pigment. Some can be fixed by an iron on low heat as long as a towel is used to protect the surface. But I've quickly discovered that PH balance plays an important role, else the paper will yellow or become brittle.

Think i dont blend with my fingers anymore.gonna use a pencil to blend. Made also a new sketch of my daughter. Dont know i Will do first. Mother or daughter. Owner of the shop orders Some new paper for me. Gonna take a week before it arrives.

I had to break the same habit myself as the oil from your hands will affect the longevity of the piece. Well, hopefully it's worth the wait.

Its a good exercise to make Some pièces twice! Working on my daughter now but the colors i used with my Mother i can almost use them all on this painting. Made 2 layers in 3 hours so its a bit faster. Will look if i can put it in stash. You have a great galary.
