Hi! I’m here from oc training to give some feedback on Iris.

So, um, I kinda love her.

I realize that’s not very deep or helpful, but honest, I do. I love her personality and character design and… I should probably just break this down for you, shouldn’t I.

One of the things I appreciate the most about her story is how,for lack of a better word, fair it is. Iris may be considered an “unconventional” woman, but she truely has a mix of more “feminine” and “masculine” traits and interests. She is who she is, and she likes what she likes, regardless of the cultural baggage. You didn’t create a “strong female character” that rejects all things girly on principle, you created a strong female character that likes skirts and gets her hands dirty and plays music and has an all consuming curiosity and love for learning and whose strongest trait, is her compassion. That is real, that is good, that is appreciated.

Another thing I like is how you dealt with her parents. Yes, that did wrong. They shouldn’t have hurt their daughter the way they did, and they especially shouldn’t have put her into a position that forced her to be false with them, but they are not complete monsters. They are simply people, who did wrong, when trying to do right. Even if they never understand, they love her in the best way they can. I appreciate this as well. So many stories paint all who oppose the protagonist as only wrong and evil, and while evil does exist in this world, I think being that simplistic about it is a mistake. After all, there are many people in this world that I may never understand or agree with on certain issues, but if I can look at them not as the enemy, but as simply people, trying to do what’s right, then I think I’m headed in the right direction.

One thing I think would be interesting would be to see is some darker traits. Does she resent her parents for what they did to her? What about the war? Does she have any lingering anger surrounding that and what it took from her? Does she face difficulty being a woman in her chosen profession? How does she deal with that? Watching and rooting for characters to overcome failings, both external and internal, is one of the things I like most about stories.

Ahem. On the pure aesthetic side of things, she has one of my favorite character designs I’ve ever seen. I love warm earth tones, and she seems tailor made to use as many of those as possible. (Yeah, I know, super subjective, but the truth.) Her default clothing design is absolutely beautiful, and I love how you managed to make it a mix of more masculine and more feminine design. It tells me a lot about her right from the start.

So, um. I suppose what I wanted to say is I love what you’ve done with her and I can’t wait to see what you do next!
